WelshChappie's post ''hits the nail on the head'' - particular with regard to the buttons.
Journalists may congratulate themselves, that when the chips were down for the hapless Mr.Avery, their ''fellow journos'' stood shoulder to shoulder in defiance of the ''nasty Mr.Zodiac'' [?].
The reality,as inferred by WelshChappie, may have been slightly different [?]
More a case of ''let me have one of those buttons, quickly'' [?].Not prepared to take a bullet,on account of that ''hothead'' Avery.....''...on this one,he's on his own - and we can always pretend that we,as a profession, are a courageous lot.''.

Just to steer things back to The Halloween card...
Perhaps some Zodiac enthusiasts of experience, have looked a little further into the Tim Holt comic [June-July 1952],that influenced the ''By Fire,By Gun,By Knife,By Rope''which appears on the back of Zodiac's Halloween card [?].
Tim Holt, himself appears,as a ''local good guy'' from the town of Bullet,in this comic, bearing his name. The specific story is about ''The Man of 1,000 Faces'',a dark character and criminal, who flees from the law in France, arriving in ''America''.Landing at Galveston,Anton Lamaire makes his way to Bullet,California, via Dallas and Taos.
The story is,of course,''a load of old cobblers'' - but some interesting comparisons, that could be interpreted as influences on Zodiac :
Anton Lamaire, who ''is'' The Man of 1,000 Faces,at one point comments on a perceived adversary : ''That devilish Detective Calvert is too smart ! I'll have to go into the sewers to escape him,and once again change my disguise.''.
Having murdered a local man Jim Spencer, and assumed him by disguise, suspicions start to fall on Lamaire, when Tim Holt bumps in to him, noting that Lamaire leaves red make-up on Holt's shirt. That's when Holt remembers that Jim Spencer was a right-handed man,who wrote with his left hand - whereas the ''impostor'' was writing with his right hand, when the incident occurred.
Lamaire takes on a few disguises, including ''Eagle Feather'' - a grown up version of ''Little Beaver''.There is even a bit about fingerprints, using ''Black Powder'' to prove Lamaire's guilt [!].
''The Man of 1,000 Faces'' ends up in jail. But one senses that he will be free in time for the comic's next edition - ''The Villain who can make up his features to resemble anyone at all - even Tim Holt, himself !''.
Inspiration perhaps, for that well known ''water rat'',Zodiac [?].

The observation of the underlining,to denote ''LAV'',on the envelope of the Halloween card, has been ''well trodden'' in the past.
Explanations include an ancient word for ''kill'',and simply,''LAVatorial'' humor from Zodiac.[Paul Avery contains a toilet !].
Most observers will also have noted that ''LAV'' is prominently displayed on the back of the Halloween card, since it ''resides'' inside the word ''slaves''.
In this word display,on the back of the card,''PARADICE'' intersects ''SLAVES'',giving prominence to the word ''RAD'',also.
''RAD'' is normally employed by scientists to represent units of radiation absorption.
But mathematicians also use ''RAD'' as ''lazy hand'' for ''Radians''.
Is there any significance,or intention, that Zodiac's ''word cross'' gave prominence to ''LAV'' and ''RAD'' ?
Suggestions [?].

Some subliminal messaging,perhaps [?].
''RAD''coupled with ''BOO'' got me thinking about the reclusive character ''BOO RADLEY'' from Harper Lee's ''To Kill a Mockingbird''.
''To Kill a Mockingbird'',a novel published in 1960,is a coming-of-age story set in the 1930's ''Deep South'',and focuses on events in a town called Maycomb.
Boo Radley is a reclusive neighbor of a lawyer and his three children.
There is an unpleasant man, whom the children mock by modeling their snowman on,called Mr.Avery.
There is an even more unpleasant man,who attempts to attack the children, called Robert E Lee Ewell [note ''Robert H.'',as first caller to Vallejo Police, after ''408'' solution published - The Tip I'm Robert E EEE.].
There is a whole chapter devoted to a pageant, organized by the town,to celebrate Halloween.
Is it possible that Zodiac's Halloween card to Paul Avery was influenced by ''To kill a Mockingbird'' ?
Perhaps that is the underlying message Zodiac intended [?].Paul Avery was the one who mocked Zodiac, and now Zodiac was putting the message across that he intended to ''Kill a mocking bird ''.

Further to my previous post,it also occurred to me that ''Avery'' sounds the same as ''Aviary'' - which is a large enclosed bird sanctuary.
Hence,Zodiac's ''You are doomed !'' refers to a ''Mocking Bird'',who carries the phonetic name of a bird safe house.
But,no escape for the hapless Mr.Paul Avery.
Not,if Zodiac has any say in the matter.

Perhaps it is time to take stock of Zodiac's influences in his ''construction'' of The Halloween Card.
The ''Peek-a-boo'' eyes,with distinctive lashes,from San Francisco Private Detective,William V Peekaboo Pennington.
The distinctive symbol, often referred as ''ZVF'',from cartoonist Fred Harmon's personal cattle brand [Colorado registered].
The four expressions,''By Fire,By Gun,By Knife,By Rope'',as taken from a Tim Holt comic [1952].
The ''Crucifixion Cross'',as constructed with the words ''PARADICE'' and ''SLAVES'' intersecting - standing alone, and centered. This, probably influenced by a William Blake painting - and gives an explanation to ''By Fire'' - Zodiac's ''chariot of fire'' - his motorcar, and ''accomplice''.For there is no evidence that Zodiac was an arsonist [?].
The ''now compelling'' [?] evidence of the influence of the novel ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' - with its references to Mr.Avery [Aviary],Robert E Lee,Boo Radley, and Halloween.
In addition, some evidence of lavatorial humor, which may well give clues to what is under the pumpkin, and inferences to sodomy [?].
As we examine ''Documentation'' that Zodiac left behind - his letters, cards, ciphers, unconventional spelling, doodles, personal branding - we find that, often is the case of ''eclecticism'' at play.Influences from an array of sources.
Zodiac's mind - ''busy'',and well read [?].

I note that website manager Richard Grinell has made a Boo Radley/Mr. Avery connection with the novel ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' - and has written a very informative article on his website.
Perhaps he will spot the Aviary/Robert E Lee connection here, also.
There is clearly an understandable ''fixation'' about the pumpkin generally - since it tantalizingly hides, possibly so much more,as a figurative jig-saw piece [?].Mr.Grinell has proffered its relationship to the agricultural element of The Halloween pageant in the novel. He may well be correct [?].
Just as a ''little damp squib'',I should just like to point out that no one ever seems to consider that the pumpkin may not actually be part of Zodiac's ''contribution'' [?].More specifically, that ''Quantico'' have released image of the card, using a pumpkin cut-out themselves,in order to conceal information from the public.
The ''noticeable'' ''FAG FEE'' wordplay ,on the back of the card, lends possible credence to this, with undertones of sexual penitence that Avery might be subjected to,in Zodiac's ''Paradice''.
As a final general comment,''we'' as amateurs, can often lose sight of the fact that Law Enforcement hold advantages,in the documentation they hold.
''We'' just have to try that much harder,in bringing something extra and new,to the table [?].''They'' will entertain us if we do - otherwise, they will just leave us ''whistling in the wind'' [!].

Round and round in circles :
Harper Lee's novel ''To Kill a Mockingbird'',climaxes with three children being saved from an attack,by reclusive neighbor Boo Radley.
The attacker was one Robert E.Lee Ewell.
General Richard Ewell was under the command of General Robert E.Lee,at the Battle of Gettysburg, during the American Civil War - and Ewell was seen as the weak link, which forced a retreat by Lee's Confederate Army.
So,we know how Harper Lee put her ''Baddie's'' name together.
Robert E.Lee's first major success as a military leader, was seizing back a military arsenal, held by slave abolitionists,at Harpers Ferry [October 1859].
So,we know how Harper Lee's parents put her name together.
-------------
Just as a reference for the future :
General Robert E.Lee's military adversary, during the American Civil War,was a man named ''Grant'' - General Ulysses S. Grant.
General Robert E.Lee's military career started as a gifted Army Engineer, but had eyes on the future,as a military tactician.Lee's hero was Frederick The Great,King of Prussia, and famed military tactician [1712-1786].

Further Zodiac connections to General Robert E.Lee :
Robert E.Lee fathered seven children - four daughters and three sons, including Robert E.Lee junior, whom Lee and his wife Mary, always called ''Boo'' [!].
As a general,Lee used slaves in vast numbers - up to 10,000,more particularly to construct ''earthworks'',or huge trench constructions to protect Iron Works, which housed munition depots and military arsenals. His nickname was ''King of Spades'',on account of issuing his combat troops with spades to create trenches,in order to ''entrench'' themselves,in readiness for battle.
Robert E.Lee's slavery connections eventually caught up with him, when he became the subject of scandal,in the mistreatment of slaves. It was reported by The New York Tribune, that three slaves, under his care, had been whipped - and that he had personally carried out part of this punishment. The expose included a letter of witness testimony, published by The New York Tribune, signed anonymously by one ''A Citizen''.This,on June 19th 1859.
[Refer : ''The Citizen's Card'',sent to SF Chronicle,March 8th 1974 - and signed ''A Citizen''.]

Well,''blow me over with a feather''.
If it's not staring everyone in the face,by now...it should do !
Zodiac saw himself as the famed military tactician Robert E.Lee.That which constitutes his primary motive, was ''persecution'' of his adversary William Joseph ''Ulysses S.'' Grant.
But,''our'' Mr.Zodiac got a taste for the ''infamy'' and ''glory'' of his own deeds - and became his own self styled monster.
Why did Zodiac persecute Mr.W.J.Grant ?
Well,I've known that for a long time.Unfortunately, everyone will just have to wait, until Law Enforcement play ''catch up''.
Message to Law Enforcement : ''Just get on with it !''
Thank you.

Hello its me.
Since we appear to be in Southern Confederacy ''territory'' with the Halloween Card, here's a thought on the ''Sorry no cipher'' cross :
''The Crossroads to War'' is often used as verbal symbolism to denote the coming about of The American Civil War.As if there was ''no going back'' and ''let battle commence''.Perhaps Zodiac created this ''crossroads'' as a portent,to what was to come, for the unfortunate Paul Avery [?].
In the context of The American Civil War,the ''real'' crossroads was the strategic town of Corinth, traversed by two major railroads :Memphis & Charleston - and - Mobile & Ohio.Corinth was,in effect ''the railroad crossing'' of the war.
But,perhaps a more simple explanation : The cross of St.Andrews, with 13 stars denoting the 13 unofficial confederate states,on the Battle Flag.
This is more commonly known as ''The Southern Cross''.
Perhaps it is ''The Southern Cross'',that Zodiac intended to recreate [?].

Ah !
A further thought to the ''sorry no cipher'' cross, being a recreation of ''The Southern Cross'' :
In constituting the 13 unofficial confederacy states, the cross represents the claimed 13 victims of Zodiac,up until that point.
Remember,an inference of the Halloween Card is,that Paul Avery is to become Zodiac's ''4-Teenth''victim [!].
Those 13 states became swallowed up into The Union, when the South lost the war.
Those 13 states became empowered by a greater land, just as the 13 victims became empowered by a ''greater being''.

That's it ! It's The Southern Cross.
Note that Zodiac employs ''sorry no cipher'' twice to construct the cross. There is no alphabetic letter intersection - only physical word intersection.
In effect that ''sorry no cipher''is to be interpreted once,in meaning derived - and...''sorry no cipher'' adds up to 13 alphabetic letters !
Message to Zodiac : ''You're so stuffed ! - just like a kipper.Give yourself up...it's only a matter of time,now.''.

Yes,looking at the ''sorry no cipher'' cross from a distance, and ''out of focus'',it does look like The Southern Cross.Zodiac has even placed the word ''no'' isolated, and entirely central at the intersection point - just as one of the 13 stars on The Southern Cross, appears.
One has to judge Zodiac's ''artistic merits'' to the extent of persuasiveness, though [?].
------------
If I might direct the reader to the back of the card,we,in effect, see a Christian cross, formed by ''SLAVES'' intersecting ''PARADICE''.
In 1861 Robert E.Lee resigned his commission with the U.S. Army,in order to join up with the Confederate States of America. He abandoned his mansion, inherited from his father-in-law,to move south, where his true heart lay.
This mansion was confiscated by the U.S. Government,in lieu of taxes owed. His physical Estate eventually was transformed into, what is now known as The Arlington National Cemetery - the second largest cemetery in the USA.As well as many national heroes, there lie buried many thousands of soldiers.
So,it is possible that the Christian cross,on the back of The Halloween Card,is representative of a simple headstone [?].A headstone for Zodiac's ''Paradice slaves''.And,yet another nod to Zodiac's hero,Robert E.Lee.

The ''rumblings'' of war between The Southern States and The Union, which finally manifested itself in The American Civil War [1861],had come about in many guises.
Not least propaganda.John Townsend,a South Carolina State Senator and Cotton Plantation owner, published a ''long winded'' pamphlet on October 29th 1860,entitled :
THE DOOM OF SLAVERY IN THE UNION - Protecting our slavery institutions.
In this pamphlet,Townsend referred to Slave Abolitionists as Black Republicans, and accused them of forcing a weak and powerless President,to become unable to protect Southern interests.
Townsend ranted : ''.....folly and crime of the Abolitionists, who, under pretense of benefiting the slave, would plunge him down into so miserable a doom ! ''.
In Zodiac's Halloween Card to Paul Avery, the defining threat is '' YOU ARE DOOMED ! ''.
So,perhaps Mr.Avery's afterlife,would become akin to Townsend's vision of unemployed slaves - a ''doomed'' existence [?].
