Yes,Davb, the ''Nam'' angle is entirely possible.Accountability of military personnel,San Francisco based, may have been achievable for Law Enforcement,on the Zodiac case. But it's these ''transient'' workers, that would have been a ''nightmare'' for LE to ''nail down''.
And,that could have included ''traveling'' military personnel [?].
I am a believer in Lyndon Lafferty's ''library investigations''.More specifically,that Zodiac impersonated W.J.Grant,and withdrew,thereafter holding on to,''The Mikado'' LP from JFK Library,Vallejo [02-05-68 - 03-17-70],and Kahn's Codebreakers book from Fairfield's Solano County Library [02-13-68 - 08-20-69].
What ''gets me'' everytime,is ''The Mikado'' LP.That person [Zodiac [?]],would not have held on to it [...and checking it in and out ten times..],if they were staying at a hotel or guest house.''Zodiac'' must have had the ''semblance'' of a semi-permanent and private residence.AND,if he liked the LP so much, why didn't he,in all that time, find a copy to purchase [?].
An isolated example, perhaps, but this must have been a person, that was forever ''coming and going'' [?].
One only has to look at all the dates of correspondences and crimes.
If Zodiac didn't have certain ''Scarlet Pimpernel'' qualities to him....I will eat my hat !

Yes,''The Scarlet Pimpernel'' - the story of a man [Sir Percy Blakeney],with a secret identity [The Scarlet Pimpernel],and secret skills [Disguise,A Swordsman,An Escape Artist],who appeared to vanish into thin air, save leaving a ''calling card'' ,in his wake.
''The Zodiac Killer'' - the story of a man [name unknown],with a secret identity [The Zodiac],and secret skills [Disguise,A Gunman,A Butcher,An Escape Artist],who appears to vanish into thin air, save leaving a ''calling card'' ,in his wake.
The Scarlet Pimpernel refers to a play, and subsequently a novel,by Baroness Orczy, which tells the story of a ''foppish'' English Aristocrat, who was minded to save ''The Ruling Classes'' from ''extinction'' by the ''tyranny'' of the conquering French Revolutionists.
Sir Percy Blakeney,in disguise, seemed to just appear and disappear,in the blink of an eye - and the popularity of his fearless exploits, gave rise to a new genre of heroes with a secret identity, such as ''Zoro'' and ''Batman''.
Perhaps Zodiac,as an avid reader, was impressed by this English Aristocrat, and a further self appointed title,''The Red Phantom'',may have been influenced by ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'' [?].
''They seek him here, they seek him there.'' - as quoted in the novel, which became the opening lines for the song : ''Dedicated follower of fashion'' - a hit single, for the group,The Kinks,in 1966.
From the name of a flower - to ''Flower Power'',all around,in the reign of The Zodiac Killer [?].
Not just a flower connection - but a ''Flower Power'' connection, also.

The Scarlet Pimpernel was the inspiration for many characters who had a secret identity and secret skills.

Yes,with The Scarlet Pimpernel,he always seemed to have the post French Revolution regime on their toes,as he would suddenly turn up to save fellow aristocrats, destined for the guillotine, causing havoc and mayhem,as he achieved his goals.
Zodiac, technically speaking,''only'' committed two murders,as the self-declared ''The Zodiac'' - Cecilia Shepard and Paul Stine. But there is evidence that he left his ''calling card'',in both cases....The car door ''scorecard'' at Lake Berryessa, and a ''contrived'' detail in Paul Stine's fares book, linking him as a ''hoax'' caller, over the 408 solution.
But then,a host of letters, from Zodiac, were ''calling cards'',in themselves, with regard to ''perpetuated terror'' [?].The Scarlet Pimpernel,of course, leaving the small flower - the scarlet pimpernel, behind him,as a reminder of his ''visitation''.
But most of all,its this sense of ''coming and going'',that seems to link Zodiac and Sir Percy.
I believe that Zodiac, through work arrangements,in his ''real life'',held residency in two places....San Francisco vicinity - and, A.N.Other.

Did the Scarlet Pimpernel ever use any codes?

Baroness Orczy wrote a number of sequels to The Scarlet Pimpernel, though none quite as popular as the first book [and play].
As far as I am aware, there were never any codes featured, except the codes of a gentleman [!].
In a way,''codes'' is just an extension of ''disguise'' - more specifically,as a form of secret communication [?].
Disguise was,of course, carefully considered by Zodiac - and admitted as such.
Further ''evidence'',may emerge of a stronger link, but I believe there is,at least,a suggestion that The Scarlet Pimpernel represented an influence on Zodiac.

“They seek him here. They seek him there. Those Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in heaven? Is he in hell? That damned, elusive Pimpernel!”“The Scarlet Pimpernel” was a radio show from 1952 to 1953. archive.org/details/The_Scarlet_Pimpernel Later, “The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel” was a television series in 1956. Marius Goring was the actor who portrayed the Scarlet Pimpernel, first on the radio show, and then on the television show.

Just on a small amount of research,I believe that the British actor Marius Goring played Sir Percy,in both T.V. and Radio productions of The Scarlet Pimpernel.
These productions gained a popular following,in both Britain and the U.S.,in the fifties.
So,it is entirely possible that Zodiac, going through his childhood years, became aware of this character, through these productions.
One shouldn't assume that all ''Arts and Culture'' was absorbed through a single medium [?].Much of what becomes apparent,as influencing Zodiac, may well have been through school education and library visits, but those post-war years saw a large rise in Television ownership, and expansion of that side of the entertainments industry.
I believe that Zodiac was a bit of a loner, and ''Book Worm''.But merely on the basis of being a very curious person - which he undoubtedly was, entertainment and education was harnessed at every opportunity.

A very interesting article posted,Ricardo.
The ''Calling Card'' became very much a feature of Zodiac's ''persona'',as he quite quickly hit on the idea of branding himself.
Never was his sense of self,so theatrical, than his ''appearance'' at Lake Berryessa...and,in broad daylight.
Many have pondered why Zodiac bothered with his costume,if his intentions were to end the lives of ''Bryan and Cecilia'' [?].
I believe that the answer is simple.
Zodiac desired to be thrilled,by the shock on their faces.
He was to be disappointed...they just thought he was any old weirdo.
His ego came before him.
