I want to report a brain-feck. No, a triple brain feck. (I always wondered why he used the indefinite article first. He knew what he was going to say. Could it be... a clew?)

I want to report a brain-feck. No, a triple brain feck. (I always wondered why he used the indefinite article first. He knew what he was going to say. Could it be... a clew?) Well I read the mispelling of Clue in Z's letter the other day as 'Clew' and it sounded rather familiar and I couldn't think why or from where. Then I remembered, Jack the Ripper Case. At one of the scenes a message was found scrawled on the wall which a Insp. decided to erase upon his arrival which came to be a decision that He would regret later, but at the time He washed it off the wall because London had a fairly large Jewish population and the message was clearly anti-semitic in nature and it was recalled as stating, with spelling errors: "The Juwes (sic -Meaning Jews) are the men that will not be blamed for nothing." Juwes just reminded me of Clews.

Fascinating observation,WelshChappie.
It makes one want to dust down those old copies of ''Alice'' books,to look for more ''Clews'' [?].
I suspect that Zodiac wasn't a ''full on'' bigot. It seems as if he liked to ''echo the stereotype'' bigot,to illustrate to us that he was ''just a regular guy'' [?].
Yea,''Zodiac'',but regular guys don't go murdering pretty young women, and hold Northern California to moral ransom.
An inspiration,to be on the lookout for more of ''them Clews'',in the future.

It is generally accepted that Zodiac regularly misspelled words deliberately - either because he just felt like it - or,because he believed that he might leave behind a few red herrings. He was minded to create decoys and time wasting legacies. He desired to keep anyone interested in him - but, often than not, nothing conclusive would come of someone's ventures down exploratory avenues.
I believe that we can conclude,at the very least, that he was of advanced education - more than probably, siding on the applied sciences disciplines.
What we can be confident of is,that he was literate,as well as numerate.
Whether accidental,or not,''Clews'' is actually old English for ''Clues'',and still an admissible spelling today.
What might be of interest to some,is that ''Clew'' is more usually used in a nautical context. To ''clew up'' or ''clew down'' a flag or a sail - as in ''furl'' or ''unfurl''.

An interesting foray, into the world of Greek Mythology,Geoffrey Chaucer and Jack the Ripper,Ricardo.
As made reference on the site mentioned, one ''unraveled the clews,to find that a yarn had been spun.''
A ''Zodiac journey'' on offer ? The investigator is lead through,to sample Zodiac's breadth of literary knowledge - only to find that the ''clew'' amounted to yet another Red Herring !

I think we could be struggling to develop the word ''clew'',as a topic on its own,so I would just like to bring the very notion of a ''clue'' or ''clues'',into the spotlight.
What are most people referring to,specifically,by the introduction of ''clue'' into the whole ''Zodiac equation'' ?
I came late into the world of ''Zodiac'',as a researcher/investigator,having looked into other unsolved murders that may,or may not yet, hold connections with the case of The Zodiac Killer.
One of the first things that struck me,when I entered the ''Zodiac arena'',was that there was a general assumption that,Zodiac had left his real identity ''somewhere'' in the ''mire'' of his actions or correspondences. The sending of the ''My name is ----'' cipher, being a case in point.
I have to admit, that it never really has occurred to me,that Zodiac would do such as thing,as give away his true identity. As much as he tantalizingly suggested that real identity can be found,he has equally stated,on more than one occasion, that he wouldn't make it available to be found.
Most of us can agree that Zodiac displayed mood swings. And that the possibility that he might have made his real name ''attainable'' at a time that he felt lowest, and in need of giving himself up [?].
But,no....I don't believe it ever did happen.A real ''clue'' offered,to give an investigator a chance, was never on the table,in the cold light of day.
The overriding motivation, for Zodiac, was to perpetuate his anonymity,so that the opportunity to act in such a way,as to provide ''relief'' from the demons, that would build up inside him,was always available to him.
Self healing,by temporary acquirement of the sensation of empowerment.
The long and the short of it is,that Zodiac never did intend to get caught, and that there never would be ''clues'' intentionally left behind,to facilitate this, for those in his pursuit.

My previous post was, perhaps,a bit negative...but I feel it necessary,to convey a ''reality check'' to the reader.
That being that,at the very least,we should not have expectations that Zodiac's real name will suddenly materialize,in a clue that Zodiac has offered.
The solution to the ''my name is -----'' cipher, that I have submitted,to the authorities is actually an address, related to Zodiac's Alma Mater.Hence,in my view, yet another ''nail in his coffin'',with regard to exposure of his true identity.
Naturally, like many,I may be wrong...but at least I feel confident that I am ''playing Zodiac's game '' - and not being taken in by his ''Tomfoolery ''.
Zodiac liked to draw us in,so that he would become of interest to us....then take us on a journey, leaving ''clues'',as in a paper chase ,in order to keep our interest ''keen''.
It was not in Zodiac's interest, for us to ''lose interest'',since it more than became apparent that Zodiac was a ''publicity whore'',and was smitten by the limelight.
Zodiac's primary motive,I would suggest, was to impose himself over a particular individual,by fear and other means,to compensate for the ''empowerment'' that this person's ''status'' had over Zodiac. To make this person's life,a living hell.
Zodiac intended this form of ''tenuous torture'' to continue,as long as it suited Zodiac.
But it just so happens, that Zodiac's personal goal, made him in to a celebrity of notoriety, and his vanity and shallowness, started to become a greater attraction.
Now Zodiac was, effectively, ''playing to the masses'' - and that called for new and ''clever'' tricks,in order to keep the ''audience'' interested.
So,''clues'' had to be left behind,as part of keeping that interest going. It would be a show of Zodiac verses The Cops, and masses would be engaged and enthralled.
Zodiac would have to be seen as giving ''The Law'' a fighting chance, but that he,Zodiac, would always come out on top,to fight another day.
The ''clues'' themselves, would therefore have to appear ''novel'' and entertaining .And,indeed,solvable.
But,with Zodiac,it was always a case of ''Close'',but not too close.
''Almost'' - but no cigar.

I think the Zodiac killer’s use of the word “clews” (instead of “clues”) is a clew (clue). Many of the suspects would not have spelled the word that way.

Absolutely,Ricardo.I agree.
But merely as in the proverbial ''spinning of a yarn'' [!].
For ''clew'',read ''red herring''.
