In examining the front of the Halloween card,there are some numerical observations that have already been noted in the past.The number 14 written on the skeleton's right hand,''three'' fingers up on that same hand - and,the formation of a ''six'' made by the index finger and thumb.Coupled with an Apollo ''8'' postage stamp on the envelope,we could be getting close to the authenticity of that ''4-8336'' partial phone number.Perhaps not Paul Avery - perhaps belonging to another ''player''in Zodiac's world of subterfuge [?].
The cut out pumpkin has always bemused me.It appears to be a bit on the ''base'' side,compared to all other efforts of play and teasing,that Zodiac has invested [?].Looking at the introduction : ''I feel it in my bones.You ache to know my name.And so I'll clue you in...''
The reader is tantalized to know what is behind this pumpkin [?].I would suggest the possibility that the pumpkin is not of Zodiac's making,inferring that the ''Feds''have elected to cover up the pelvic area,and know more than us [?].What could be more ''unimaginative'',than to stick a Halloween pumpkin over a ''strategic'' spot ?
Perhaps there are no further clues to be gleaned in this area of the skeleton [?].However,Zodiac has bought into the notion that he ''feels'' it in his ''bones'' that we ache to know his name.
A possible solution to the riddle of the pumpkin ? Zodiac,in skeleton form,is carrying a ''boner'' of unrealistic proportions,and the ''Feds'' are sparing our blushes.

The previous post may have appeared ''puerile'' to some - specifically,that the thought of the intended recipient [Mr.Avery],aching to know Zodiac's name,was making Zodiac feel sexually aroused.
If we return to examine the back of the card,we may note that,apart from ''SLAVES'',two other words can be read vertically :''FAG'' and ''FEE''.Indeed,the fact that a single ''y'' placed below a ''B'',thereby pushing the word ''KNIFE''further down,ensures that the word ''FEE''is distinctly readable.
It is generally known that Mr.Avery made homophobic references about Zodiac,in his disdain and derision of the serial killer.
''You are doomed !'',as a threat of ''enslavement'',may not have been with death,alone,in Zodiac's mind.In Zodiac's ''PARADICE'',buggery also awaited the hapless Mr.Avery.Zodiac would demand his ''FAG FEE'',for Mr.Avery's unkind words in life - and the eyes of Zodiac's previous 13 ''victoms'' would be forced to watch.
Not so unrealistic...that which is behind the pumpkin [?].

To return again to ''4-TEEN'',which may be a small alpha-numeric cipher :
I have previously posted that ''4-TEEN'' is possibly solved as ''4-8336'' - based on the official Bell table for letter to number translation.So,anyone with access to California archive phone directories,a chance to make a name for yourself.Perhaps the last five digits of a phone number to a ''player'' in Zodiac's world.....Belli,Toschi,Avery,WJGrant....someone Zodiac wished to deflect blame upon [?].
What I wish to add here,is that I have noted that ''48336'' is also a Zip code - centering on OAKLAND COUNTY,MICHIGAN - a suburb to the south of Detroit.It is ''to date''in the top ten wealthiest Counties in USA,populated by mostly engineers and designers in the Motorcar Industry.

I agree with the theory that His declaring 'Sorry, No Cipher' is in fact in reference to the card itself being one big cryptic message or clue.
Now someone did recently point out that the 'Sorry, No Cipher' message was just to state that there was no cipher this time, and He apologized. This is amusing to me because if true, The Zodiac would seem unsure if Paul Avery would notice that isn't a cipher and need to confirm it for Him and us.
For me, His stating this apology is just referencing that there is a message hidden in the actual card and it itself is the cipher so to speak.

Another 'coincidence' relating to the Skull and Bones secret society angle is the way the 'sorry no cipher' is written to form an X. Here's the official logo of Yale's Skull & Bones Secret Society:
So, does Zodiac believe that the Bay Area residents are all eagerly awaiting his next boastful letter accompanied by a Cipher that they can all get to work on? Does he feel bad and guilty because he believes that Don and Bettye Harden are eagerly awaiting his next puzzle and is overcome with remorse for not giving Don Harden a reason to reach for that book on his shelf "Secret and Urgent", a book all about Cipher's and their construction written by Fletcher Pratt? No.
Given Zodiac has shown on numerous occasions that he has an almost child like humour, I can almost picture him giggling to himself as he writes 'Sorry no Cipher' knowing that there is one hidden in the message. As you explained in one of your posts, the crosswordlike way in which the Zodiac killer wrote “sorry no cipher” seems to be a puzzle, too. |

It certainly could be a form of ''Double Crossing'',WelshChappie.One must also bear in mind,that Zodiac had,prior to this,undertaken two ''mammoth''ciphers in the ''408'' and the ''340''.The first easily solved - the second turned out to be a bit of a ''pig's ear''...either too tough to get a message across,or Zodiac realizing that he'd ''mucked up'',and faced ridicule on both accounts [?].
So,perhaps Zodiac had decided against the idea of the ''big'' message...now he would focus on more ''clever'' and ''mischievous'' puzzles [?].
Focusing on the ''Sorry No Cipher'' cross,there may have been an element of ''sugar coated sarcasm'' about its inclusion.A website contributor has recently put forward the possibility that its physical form is simply,a ''big kiss'',to endorse the ''apology'' - which nevertheless excluded the fact that other further puzzles would be included in the card.
In the knowledge that Zodiac had included two ''cutesy'' stickers [unused] - one of which stated ''Thinking of you'' [!],I think we could be getting closer to the mark [?].
I put forward the theory that Zodiac intended to give Paul Avery a BIG shock,and believe that he succeeded.
Perhaps we can dismiss both the ''crossbones'' and the ''crossroads'' theories [?].
The only ''Jolly Rodger'' may be under the pumpkin.

It's as if everyone back then was lining up for the days newspaper eagerly expecting The New Zodiac Puzzle to be published, and He has to say sorry and let everyone down for not enclosing one.
"Apologise to my Subjects awaiting one, but, Sorry, no cipher. Sorry, No Cipher."
Hang on Z, nobody was eagerly expecting you to send one. So, to say your sorry as if we are all Earth Shatteringly disappointed is, well, very out of place and not needed."

More on a point of reflection,Zodiac's authenticated letters represent a ''body of work'' written by a troubled person,with demonic depths to his soul.
These letters,all stacked up and in chronological order,give us an overview,with ''benefits'' of cross referencing and ''joining the dots''.
But,the ''Belli letter'' and ''Halloween Card'' are,to an extent,exceptions - in that they represent personal sentiments,directed at specific individuals.Even the ''Count Marco letter'' was,essentially,sent to a whole Newspaper.
In Belli's case,it was an appeal from Zodiac.But with Paul Avery,there was much pent up anger and frustration - and perhaps a deep need by Zodiac,to make Avery ''pay'' for his hurt [?].
So,perhaps different rules of engagement,that don't necessarily fit ''the'' pattern [?].
Zodiac of course,is still a complete c--t.

Zodiac did issue the threat to P. Averly of The Chronicle personally to get P. Averly's attention by issuing "BOO!" then stating His secret Pal Paul has been selected by Him and ... 'YOU ARE DOOMED!'
Now Avery didn't respond as such but had Zodiac issued this omen directly at me, i'd have replied: "WHY ME? Don't shoot the messenger Pal of Secret it was only Me publishing the claim your clumsy and Gay....it was the Chief of Inspectors Mr Martin Lee. Here I am publishing an article hinting at your being a dunce and I, Chronicle Crime Reporter, can't even get Chief Lee's name correct & refer to Him as Marvin opposed to His actual name 'Martin.' Not fair Zodiac, Not Fair at all if you got bullets to issue at my head inscribed 'To whom it may concern. BOO!' Why don't you DOOM Marvin Lee, Chief of Insults Dpt. I request, no, restate, I fuckin demand I be allowed to carry a concealed weapon at all time.....by concealed weapon I do obviously mean.....fully automatic machine gun. It doesn't have to be factually accurate,to convey ironic ''truth'' [?].Zodiac sometimes had everyone running around like ''The Keystone Cops'' - which is probably what he intended....the master of mayhem and confusion.
I do believe that Paul Avery may have reflected that he pushed matters a little bit too personal - but it was ''the heat of battle'',and he was up for it...opportunities like that are rare in a journalist's career,if ever materializing....perhaps ''restraint'' at times might have been a more prudent call [?].
The Melvin Belli letter only fools a liberal minded Psychologist [....apologies to ''Daryll'' in advance,if any offense..].Zodiac felt a need to display a sensitive and ''lost and lonely'' side....perhaps even to gain a few women fans [?].Apologies to all women,in advance [!].
