PowerLord has referred to the number 14,in terms of its ''manifestation'' in The Halloween Card.I believe that most are agreed that 14's ''significance'' is that it infers that Paul Avery is set to become Zodiac's fourteenth victim.
Though contention over The Halloween Card is actually a ''Death Threat'',there is little doubt that the card is intended to make Paul Avery fearful [?].
PowerLord's reference to ''single'' human eyes [...of which there are fourteen...] is,indeed,of great interest.
The ''Peek-a-Boo''exclamation,within the card, immediately casts our eyes to William ''Peek-a-Boo'' Pennington,a private detective who specialized in adultery cases.
But,I would suggest,Pennington isn't the only private detective,we should be looking at [?].
Allan Pinkerton was a Chicago based ''Private Eye'',operating in the 1850's.His agency rose to the dizzy heights of providing the bodyguards for Abraham Lincoln. His agency still survives today, and uses a single human eye as its logo, with motto : ''We never sleep''.
But if we turn back to PowerLord's allusions to Freemasonry,we can focus on a ''Worshipful Brother'' of the secret society, known as a ''Masonic Principal'',who's duties are,no doubt,to ''oversee''[?].
The symbol for a ''Masonic Principal'' is a triangle, with a seeing human eye within.
So,it is indeed possible,as PowerLord implies, that the fourteen single eyes hold connections to ''The Knights Templar'',as revered by Freemasons, themselves.
Was Zodiac an illegitimate son ?
Did this ''state of affairs'' become the crux of his problems ?

In the ''Zodiac's Wordplay'' section,I have referred to the likelihood that ''PARADICE'',displayed vertically on the back of the card, holds equivalence with ''FOURTEEN'',by way of a literal translation of the Old French word ''PARADIX'',meaning ''PARADISE''.Split into ''PARA'' and ''DIX'',''PARADIX'' can be interpreted, literally,as ''FOR-TEN'' - phonetically,an explanation for the derivation of ''FOURTEEN''.
But,focusing on ''horizontal'' readings,on that back of the card, possible interpretations,in conjunction with the ''four By's'' do come to mind.
It has been noted,in the past, that ''FAG'' and ''FEE'' can be seen.Possibly an allusion to sodomy,in Zodiac's intentions towards Paul Avery [?].
With ''phonetics'' in mind, two further possibilities emerge :
i] ''By P By'' - This could be ''BYE,PAUL,BYE'' [?].
ii] ''BY D By'' - This could be ''BYE,DEE,BYE'' [?].Perhaps, more shocking, and of greater significance ?

Following on,from my previous post,it appears that the expression ''Bye-de-bye''does have official recognition.
Particularly, with regard to the era of post WW2 Holiday Camps, where hundreds of holiday makers,of all ages, would be kept entertained all day long.
A compere,for example,would open a show with ''Hi-de-hi''to the campers;and close with ''Bye-de-bye''.
So,it is certainly possible that Zodiac ''aligned'' two ''By's'' with the ''D'' of ''PARADICE'',to show ''By D By''.
Hence : ''BYE,DEE,BYE''.
Perhaps ''in print'',evidence of affection towards Darlene Ferrin,by The Zodiac Killer [?].

With ''horizontal readings'' on the back of The Halloween Card, there is,perhaps,a feeling that Zodiac may have seen ''manipulative opportunities'' to ''subliminally message'' [?].Just as with Z408 and Z340 ciphers, where countless small words appear, like POSH and BOY.
''FAG'' and ''FEE'' appear to be definitely evident....and the possibility of ''By D By'' sends shivers down one's back [?].
Perhaps two further ones [?].
i] ''NCP'' - commonly, the abbreviated form for ''Nincompoop''- an Old English word for foolish or stupid person, and believed to derive from the Latin expression,''non compos mentis'',which literally means ''not having sound mind''.Very ''Mikado - esque'' [?].
ii] ''RRN''- commonly, the abbreviated form for ''Resource Routier National'' - the National Highway system in France, and well known to the ''motorcar fraternity''.
Yes,Zodiac had a propensity for wordplay, time and time again.
And we are ''mildly cerous''.

One further ''horizontal reading'' on the back of the card is ''KIR''.
''KIR'' most usually refers to ''Knights of the Immortal Realm''.From Arthurian legend,a band of Knights who were, effectively, the blueprint for what is known as ''Special forces''.Not unlike organizations, such as the FBI,or even, the SAS.
But interestingly, the two occasions when ''composite words or expressions start with an ''aberration of form'' - namely ''NCP'' and ''By D By'',both appear to allude to Zodiac and Darlene Ferrin.
''NCP''- starts with a ''mirror image'' of the letter ''N''.And,''By D By'',starts with the ''y'' under the ''B''.
''NCP''- a possible reference to ''Nanki-Poo'' and ''Yum-Yum'',from ''The Mikado''.And,''By D By'',a possible message to the unfortunate Darlene, from Zodiac.
Certainly,''food for thought''.

''Peanuts'' and the Halloween Card -----------------------------------
''Peanuts'' cartoon strips,by Charles Schultz, have keyed into the Halloween theme, over the years, with the character ''Great Pumpkin'',akin to ''Santa Claus'' in the eyes of ''Linus''.
Variations on the word ''doomed'',are plentiful. And,the word ''BOO !'' is so recognisable, that it may even be trademarked.
The work of Charles Schultz,is most assuredly an influence on Zodiac, when he constructed his card,to send to Paul Avery.
A ''Death threat'' ? Unlikely...a combination of parody and celebration, closer to the mark.

Peek-A-Boo -----------
So often is the case that when we examine Zodiac correspondences, such as the Halloween Card,we find a number of possible solutions to specific words, images or symbols.
Indeed,we have grown accustomed to this,as part and parcel of Zodiac's methods of communication. And,in effect, what Zodiac probably meant by the particular word ''Clews''.That,in essence,Zodiac intended for the solver to spend much time over his ''riddles'' and conundrums, finding that there was not actually a single solution....and so,also, concluding that Zodiac was indeed,a clever,well-read and devious chap [!].
A further case in point, has come to light, with the expression ''Peek-A-Boo''.
Various solutions have been offered up,in the past,as to its ''Zodiac specific'' derivation, including the Private Eye,''William Peek-A-Boo Pennington'',and the place,Peek A Boo Lane, which is a mountain track, close to the holiday resort of Lake Tahoe.
Zodiac website contributor,Ray Martin, has enquired about the song,''Peek-A-Boo'',by ''The New Vaudeville Band''.
There was a ''modest'' revival of 1920's and 1930's dance music,in the 1960's,including hit songs by the British bands,''The Temperance Seven'',''The Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band'',as well as ''The New Vaudeville Band''.
''Peek-A-Boo'' was a hit single in 1967,on both sides of the Atlantic....as had The New Vaudeville Band's song,''Winchester Cathedral'',in 1966,which had achieved ''No.1'' success,as well as winning a ''Grammy''.
So,it is very possible that Zodiac, had at least, been influenced by the song,''Peek-A-Boo''.
More particularly, that we are aware of a host of instances where Zodiac used music from ''The Popular Culture'',as well as past popular periods,as influences in his communications.
Probably quite a safe bet to conclude that Zodiac was a regular radio listener of music [?].

I wonder why the Zodiac killer did not send any Halloween card to Melvin Belli⦠View AttachmentHe wished Him a happy Christmass instead as Mel, unlike 'Averly', he had no reason to be angry with. Paul Averly, on the other hand, well He was horrible enough to agree to publish comments given to him about Zodiac as uttered by A Chief of The Homicide Inspectors, Martin Lee! (Averly mistakenly calls The Chief 'Marvin') before putting to print that Zode is a clumsy criminal, far from the criminal genius he seems to see himself as and, to end this public personal war the Chief seems to be declaring gets Avery to add..."And We believe He may be (Zodiac) a latent Homosexual" Today this may cause some to be angry, but back then in the sixties when Equality, at least in terms of racial equality, was still being fought for as a right of all people regardless of color, creed, belief or background...this to the 'Alpha Male type would be the height of insult. Zodiac responded to these outrages by writing and demanding that Paul 'Must print in paper...' then recalled that "PS 2 cops pulled a goof" and proceeded to rub the Dpts. Own incompetence I its face publically thus KO'ing His antagonist opposition in the Blue corner Mr Martin 'Chief of wishing I'd kept my mouth shut' Division Lee. The Winner, by way of Knock-out, In the Red (phantom) corner...

In answer to Ricardo's question,I believe that over time,it becomes more and more apparent that Zodiac's Halloween Card to Paul Avery, was a ''parodied'' death threat....and actually, more a celebration of Avery's determination,to keep Zodiac in his sights.
Zodiac saw Avery as someone who was prepared to ''trade blows'' with Zodiac....and therefore keep Zodiac in the news.
Melvin Belli,on the other hand, was someone that Zodiac believed that he might need,in the future....to protect Zodiac,if or when it went ''pear shaped'',and Zodiac was arrested.
Despite ''comical'' sides to Belli,in terms of public perception [....an eccentric, who courted the celebrity life...],Belli was to be respected.Hence,Zodiac's letter to Belli,on 20th December 1969,saw Zodiac calling out for help, and on his ''best'' behaviour.
There would be no ''trading insults'' directly with Belli, unlike Averly, whom Zodiac came to view as his ''Secret Pal''.
There is some evidence that Zodiac had attempted to encourage a similar relationship, with Count Marco,as Averly. But it seems that ''Count Marco'' kept his humour, strictly to the content of his newspaper columns...and Spinelli was less ''irreverent'',in real life, than Zodiac had anticipated.
As an aside, perhaps, there is unsubstantiated ''evidence'' that Zodiac sent another Halloween Card....to presumed victim of abduction,Kathleen Johns [!].In addition, that Zodiac followed this up,with a Christmas card to Ms.Johns.also.
Since there are reasonable grounds to suggest that Ms.Johns had made up a lot of her abduction claim, and that senior police had decided to ''confirm'' her claim,in order to encourage Zodiac to continue writing his letters....then it could be that Zodiac, realising later that he had been duped over admitting to the abduction....decided to ''hound'' Ms.Johns,so as to inform her that he had not forgotten about her [?].

In November 1969,a suspected ''Zodiac'' sent a message to an FBI office,in Montana. This included a cryptogram, now referred to,as The San Jose Cryptogram. As a means of solving it,I concurred that ''Zodiac'' had employed the simplest of substitution keys.In allocating the alphabetic letters to the numbers one to twenty-six,the solution to that cryptogram emerged as [ O I F B I O ],beside its full encryption [ 0 9 6 2 9 0 ]. [ O I F B I O ] implies : '' Eggman - one , Eggmen- nil '',a scoreline suggesting, subliminally,by the lyrics to the Beatles song ''I am the Walrus'',to the reality of '' Zodiac - one,FBI - nil ''. And,the full numerical encryption [ 0 9 6 2 9 0 ] denoting the zip code of a post office in San Francisco, and the post box of a collection warehouse in Houston. All information, stemming from cipher keys, akin to A=1,B-2,C=3...etc. Again,we see possibilities emerging,in the perceived second Fairfield Letter,of December 16th 1969 : Zodiac presents us with a riddle, involving Californian Towns, with numerical allocations, and a boast of ''You will not catch me..''. The numerical code, appears as [ 3 1 6 8 9 3 8 ]. Employing the ''alphabetic'' keys,we see that [ C A F H I C H ] emerges. Perhaps two interpretations [?] : 1] ''California Highway Choppers'' 2] ''Cafe Hitchhikers '' The first referring to the ''CHIPS'' that chased Zodiac. The second to means of an escalation in his murders. Therefore, when we view the back of the Halloween Card, and note that Zodiac has quite obviously brought attention to the alphabetic letter '' N '',in the word ''KNIFE'',by displaying the '' N '',in mirror image form....we might wonder, why The alphabetic letter '' N '',is the FOURTEENTH letter of the alphabet. Paul Avery was the proposed FOURTEENTH victim,as set out,by the Zodiac,in that Halloween Card. The predilection to employing the ''alphabet'' keys, again, for the Zodiac ? The easiest form of encryption [?]. '' N '' is alphabetic letter, number 14. -----------------------------------------

Inside the Halloween Card, and above the second skeleton ''on the rack'' [Paul Avery [?] ],is written the ''alphanumeric'' word : '' 4-TEEN ''.
At the very least,we assume this to stand for '' 14 ''....that the skeleton, below it,has become,by inference, the Zodiac's fourteenth victim.
The play on ''Teen'' may well refer to the teenage witnesses,to the murder of taxi driver,Paul Stine.
But,is '' 14 '' really all that there is,to '' 4-TEEN ''.
I would suggest that,an additional wordplay, might be the word ''Fortean''.
''Fortean'' is an adjective, meaning ''Of unexplained phenomenon''.
Is the Zodiac, also jesting in a self celebratory way, that some of his victims vanished,by ''fortean'' means, known only to himself,as someone with, perhaps,''divine'' powers [?].
The term ''Fortean'' derives from the writer,Charles Fort, whose book,''The book the Damned'' was first published,in 1919.
Charles Fort,in effect, became a spokesperson for unexplained phenomenon, such as UFO's and unnatural skys,as well as Poltergeists,Fairies and raining frogs. The ''Damned'' was the term associated with the victims,of these ''Anomalies''.
Perhaps it is the case, that the Zodiac saw his victims,as ''The Damned'' [?].

And further to this....the ''strange'' part of the Zodiac's signature, often referred to,as ''The Flying V'' sign, with similarities,to a cattle brand, employed by cartoonist,Fred Harman,in his ''Red Ryder'' series of stories.
Through further similar brands, associated with Cattle Brand books, and the Colorado Brand books, for 1962,1957,1948 and 1938,in particular, there is little doubt that this sign was based on,what is officially categorised as ''The 7 V F '' brand.
Personally,I see an abstraction of the Zodiac's eyes and motorcar headlights, emerging out of the Diablo mountain range.
But,this is not to state an ''exactitude''....that there is one definitive answer. It does appear to be,after all,an abstraction.
But,if we accept that, the Zodiac has been quite deliberate,in employing '' 7 V F ''....then what could ''its'' significance be [?].
One suggestion,I would make is,that the ''7'' and ''F'' are linked,in a pivotal way.
Interesting, perhaps, that 7 Fahrenheit in temperature,is equivalent to -14 degrees Celsius.
So,one meaning to derive,is that it infers '' 14 below '' the surface.

Having carried out extensive research,on the history of registered cattle branding, across many States of the USA,it appears first and foremost, that there is rarely such a phenomenon,as a unique brand.
Each State has a collection of Brands, that are available for adoption,at a price, for the purpose of extended registration.New Brands are occasionally introduced,if approved by official livestock registered associations, and at extra cost,to a rancher.
The ''V'' Brand, and its many variations, including ''7 V'',and even ''7 V F'',are popular, with some ranchers, for one main reason. This is because the design resembles cattle livestock, from the ''Texas Longhorn'' strain of breeding.
So,possibly the Zodiac, desired to leave yet another clue, with his strange signature,in the Halloween Card :
The ''Texas Longhorn''....that Zodiac was a man from Texas.

Halloween Card to come [?]:
In the Zodiac's presumed 13 Hole card, sent three weeks before the arrival of Paul Avery's Halloween Card,an ''upside down T '' appeared on the 13 Hole card.
The ''upside down T'' started a postscript,''There are reports...''
The ''upside down T'' is occasionally known,as the ''eet''.But more commonly known as : ''The Graveyard Clipart''
''The Graveyrd Clipart'' is symbolic of Halloween, and is sometimes referred to,in full,as :
''The Halloween Graveyard Clipart''

To follow on from my previous comments, with reference to the 13 Hole card..just three weeks before the Halloween Card,to Paul Avery :
The Zodiac seems to have left enough evidence pointing at the probability of his predilection to crossword puzzles. In particular, his affection for ''words'' and ''crypticisms'' in general.Of interest, perhaps, that it was a couple of crossword puzzle addicts,Don and Bettye Harden, who were the first to solve the bulk of the Zodiac's ''408'' cipher.
In examining the back of the Halloween Card, the ''predominent'' vertical arrangement of words...certainly opens up possibilities that Zodiac intended a few ''subliminal'' words to emerge,on the ''horizontals''.''Fag'',''Fee'' and ''NCP'' [Nincompoop]....are examples, for consideration.
Returning to thoughts on the 13 Hole card, the ''mid-section'' of that card, does apper to offer us a glimpse into the Zodiac's influence, from crossword puzzles.
For consideration :
Vertical 1 : '' 13 t Z s ''......Thirteen teases.
Vertical 2 : '' o d '' ..........Overdose
Horizontal 1 : '' Zodiac '' ......Zodiac
Horizontal 2 : '' s d '' ........Sudden Death
Hence,the '' crossword puzzle '' glimpse,in the mid-section of the 13 Hole card,could be interpreted as a message of boast,from the Zodiac :
'' Thirteen teases : Zodiac overdoses on acts of ''sudden death'' . ''
The Zodiac - the ''crossword puzzler'' within [?].
