The cigarettes were known as “three fives”.
Here is a 1963 Australian commercial for State Express 555.

With reference to my previous post, there is another ''similar'' correspondence,in the hands of the FBI.
This, again an Astrology forecast page, and in this case, for the sign of LEO.
The pasted words appear less clear, and more ''disjointed''.More,a collection of phrases - possibly representing thoughts of Zodiac [?].
The date of this correspondence is assumed to be around the same time as the ''Cancer Flt 555'' one,but there really is no evidence that confirms this.
-----------
Some similarities appear to emerge.''Flt Three of a kind'',may be again,a reference to ''555 Filter Kings Size'' cigarettes [?].''time Hidden'' may be of similar meaning to ''Hidden Watch'' [?].
There is a phrase ''run a crooked mile mystery'',which could be a TV mystery drama,from 1969.Or,a reference to a prison drama,in the 1970 film,''There was a crooked man'' [?].
I am tempted to proffer that this correspondence was sent, circa 1971,and that ''LEO'' actually refers to ''Law Enforcement Organizations''.
The expression ''Thrilling Phenomenon'' is apparent, with the cross of happiness, below it.Perhaps a reference to Zodiac's ''encounters'' with LE,and the ''fulfilling'' burden, that he bore [?].
In addition,a ''curious'' expression, that appears to baffle, anyone attempting to disentangle it :
''C Harry can be OTT''
For what it may be worth - could this be ''Callahan.Harry can be over the top '' [?].
[Film ''Dirty Harry'' - released 1971]

Referring back to the Astrology forecast ''pasted'' page for LEO,which, together with a similar page for CANCER,and the ''Bleeding knife'' depiction,is believed to have been posted from Fairfield,CA.
From FBI files, the LEO pasted page may have been mailed on December 11th 1969,though unconfirmed....as is,of course, its actual Zodiac authenticity.
I had previously made reference to ''555'' deriving exclusively from 555 State Express cigarettes,by virtue of unique font, employed. This,on the CANCER page.
Another case of ''unique font'' can,I believe,be found on the LEO page.
This specifically,is the pasting of ''HANGUPS'',with a further pasting below, which reads : ''warring love emotions''.
The title ''HANGUPS'' comes from the monthly men's magazine ''Penthouse'',a soft porn journal specialising in high quality photography.
''HANGUPS'' was a section devoted to sex psychology....a sort of ''Agony Aunts'' and discussion column.
''Penthouse'' magazine was first published in the UK,in March 1965,and appeared on the US stands, for the first time,in September 1969.It quickly became the main rival of Hugh Hefner's Playboy magazine.
So,with the December 1969 date, inferred by the FBI,it suggests that Zodiac had acquired one of the first US edition copies of Penthouse, and removed ''HANGUPS'' for pasting purposes [?].
What ''HANGUPS - warring love emotions'' actually refers to,could be anyone's guess [?].Possibly,a ''love triangle'',involving Zodiac and Darlene Ferrin [?].
But,there is the question of ''LEO's'' Fairfield postmark.....bringing W.J.Grant back into the ''equation'',yet again [?].
Perhaps,more than anything,inferring that Zodiac was,essentially,heterosexual,himself [?].
Albeit,very troubled [!].

In the Dripping Pen Card, mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle,November 8th 1969,Zodiac had signed off with a ''scorecard'' postscript, that read :
Deg : July,Aug,Sept,Oct = 7
There has been debate, ever since,as to the true meaning of this postscript.
Had Zodiac written ''Deg'',as an abbreviation for ''Degrees'' ? Had Zodiac written ''Des'',as a possible phonetics abbreviation for ''December'' ?
Apart from this,it was all too apparent that he had written the abbreviated form of the four consecutive months,July,August,September and October....and that these months
held equivalence to the number ''7''......which we assume referred to the quantity of victims, accounted for, over that, possibly four month period.
There appears little doubt, that Zodiac was referring to the year 1969,most of which, had passed....now that his Dripping Pen Card was written in November of that year.
-----------------
If we examine, what we now know,is ''confirmed'' attacks,by Zodiac, during that four month period :
i] July 5th - Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau - Vallejo,CA.
ii] September 27th - Cecilia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell - Lake Berryessa,CA.
iv] October 11th - Paul Stine - San Francisco,CA.
Therefore,three attacks,leaving four victims dead,and two injured.
-------------------
So,one might ask, where are the other victims, not accounted for ?
And,why is it that Zodiac has entered ''Aug'' on his postscript, when it would seem to be an ''attack-free'' month ?
Naturally, these two questions have been the source of much debate, over the years.
-------------------
More usually is the case that, criminologists, both amateur and professional, start attempting to ''find'' the other victims,in order to make valid,Zodiac's proposed claims.
But it is certainly possible and,so far,Law Enforcement have no reason to believe otherwise that, there were no attacks,by Zodiac, between July 5th 1969 and September 27th 1969...a six week period between the Vallejo attack and the Lake Berryessa attack.
More particularly, none in August....or ''Aug'',as Zodiac has written.
-------------------
Here's the thing....on August 9th and August 10th,two attacks by a sect in Southern California, led by ''one'' Charles Manson, sent shock waves across the Western World.
The ''Tate LaBianca'' murders, effectively, put an end to the liberal and free notion of ''Peace and Love''.It made the headlines in every Newspaper in the western hemisphere, much less California.
Could it be,that the Tate LaBianca murders, stopped Zodiac in his tracts, both in his planning and implementation of further attacks ?
Anything that Zodiac could come up with, would never be able to compete, with the Manson atrocities....and would inevitably be ''buried'' under the daily headlines of the Manson murders, for the foreseeable future [?].
Time to take stock, for Zodiac [?].Bide his time.
By late September,Zodiac was ready again....and Cecilia Shepard would become his next victim.

Three ''citizens'',but just one Zodiac [?] -------------------------------------------
On May 8th 1974,the San Francisco Chronicle received a letter, from Zodiac, often referred to as the ''Badlands letter'',and signed ''A citizen''.
Almost five years earlier,Sergeant Lynch of the Vallejo Police, had received a short typed letter, offering a key code to solve the ''408'' Cipher. On that day,August 10th 1969,the San Francisco Chronicle had published the 408's solution, offered up by The Hardens.
The writer of the typed letter,to Sgt.Lynch, had signed anonymously as ''concerned citizen''.And,although this person's solution appeared to be the same as the Hardens,''he'' had been beaten to the punch.
Little known, perhaps, more solutions to the ''408'' cipher were to follow.Perhaps,in disbelief that the solution already published, was correct.
Interestingly, two months later, and four days before the murder of Paul Stine, the Vallejo Police received the following,as officially reported :
10-7-69 Letter received post marked San Francisco Mateo signed ''A good citizen''.The letter states that the writer has a strong feeling of ESP.While having these feelings the writer writes with a pencil. On occasion while thinking of the code letters, the pencil wrote ''Go to 56 Beach Street''.I got the name Jerry, perhaps he knows people or his name is XXXXXXX.
City Directory lists no Jerry XXXXXXX.Beach Street starts in the 1100 block.Beachwood Street starts in 700 block.[Lynch 1969]
And so,as officially reported, there exists a typed letter from August 10th 1969,signed ''concerned citizen'',to the Vallejo Police.A letter signed ''A good citizen'',dated October 7th 1969,and again sent to the Vallejo Police. Then, almost five years on,an authenticated letter, mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle, signed ''A citizen''.
''concerned citizen'',''A good citizen'',and ''A citizen''.....all the work of ''one'' Zodiac [?].

The Strange case of two serial killers ---------------------------------------
A few suggestions have been put forward,in the past,as to the origin of the Zodiac's Desk Top Poem title,''Sick of living/unwilling to die''.
Among them, and as proffered by regular Zodiac contributors,D.Oranchak and R.Grinell,is ''Weary of life, unwilling to die''.
This,an extract from the work of British Statesman and Poet,The Earl of Clarendon.
My inclinations are that the Zodiac did plagiarise the line, since a character from the work of Robert Louis Stevenson and the Earl, himself, share the same name...''Edward Hyde''.
Edward Hyde and his alter persona,Henry Jekyll, became forever synonymous with a split personality, when appearing in Stevenson's Gothic novella,''The Strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde''.
First published in 1886,the novella was greeted with critical acclaim, and went on to become successfully adapted to the stage,as a play.
Opening in London,on August 29th 1888,''The Strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde''played to a packed audience, starring celebrated actor,Richard Mansfield,in its leading ''dual'' role.
Two days following,on August 31st 1888,Mary Ann Nichols was murdered in the Whitechapel district of the city.A series of similar murders were to transpire, which would become known as those perpetrated by ''Jack the Ripper''.
Some would believe that Stevenson's Gothic play was the inspiration for the series of murders, and the actor Richard Mansfield was,for a short time, suspected as being ''The Ripper'',himself.
Perhaps one day,in the future,a few people will be gathered around a table, playing ''Trivia Pursuits'',and a question will turn up.
What person's name,do ''Jack the Ripper'' and ''The Zodiac Killer'' have in common ?
Answer : '' Edward Hyde ''.

The fifth Beatle -----------------
Murray Kaufman, known as ''Murray the K'' was a celebrated radio disc jockey, from New York, who gained top listener ratings, with radio shows,in the 1950's,'60's and '70's.
Kaufman,in essence, witnessed the birth of ''Rock 'n Roll'' through to ''Heavy Rock'',with all the populist popular music,in between.
Often referred to as ''The fifth Beatle'',on account of his predilection for ''The Fab Four'',and the vanguard,in America,of what came to be known as ''The British Invasion''.
So it seems,of particular interest, when examining the Zodiac's ''408'' Cipher,to possibly, cleverly constructed symbols, that constitute the cipher text of the Zodiac's first confirmed offering.
In the first,of the three-part ''408'',and given that the ''A'' is incomplete, and the ''K'' in mirror image form, what looks like :
M U A R R K
At first glance, could this be the Zodiac's nod,to a favoured radio voice ?
Where, perhaps,he could always bank on some Beatles music, and similar sounds ?
Zodiac's unconfirmed San Jose Cryptogram solution, appears to have been inspired by The Beatles' ''I am the Walrus''.
Zodiac's confirmed Z32,alluding to where he had planted a bomb, appears to have opening clue of The Beatles song,''Dig It'',from the ''Let it be'' Album.
Zodiac's unconfirmed ''Channel Nine'' letter, appears to be largely inspired by a collection of songs, from The Beatles.
That the Zodiac was a fan of the famous band, appears unquestionable.
Perhaps,also a fan of ''The Fifth Beatle'',then.....''Murray the K''......''M U A R R K''.

......As seen,in perhaps more compelling light : ''....H E M U A R R K ''
Recently,on examination of the ''Flag'' cipher, which brings into question, whether the [Bay Area] Zodiac, hadn't taken to start being inspired by the New York Zodiac,I had opted for assistance from the presumed FBI cipher keys offered.
However,if adopting my own keys, and working vertically, instead of the convention of ''horizontally'',I found that the ''Flag'' cipher, with alphabetical cipher text, starts :
'' A E N H N H A E Q ''
Now,where have we seen ''A E N'',before ?
That's right,the ''My name is ------'' cipher.
And,interestingly, the ''Flag'' cipher is presented,in a ''vertical'' fashion, almost pleading with the potential solver,to tackle it in this ''column first'' way.

Finally found [IMO],the origins of the ''curious'' capital ''E'' employed by the Zodiac,in his use of the title,''Mr.Editor'',for his controversial SLA letter,of February 14th 1974,and signed ''A friend''.
The letter's controversial nature, stems from the indications that the FBI ''engineered'' the letter,to have been sent, one day before the kidnapping of Heiress,Patricia Hearst.Thereby making the Zodiac appear to look foolish,in his attempts to show allegiance with the Symbionese Liberation Army's anarchistic struggles.
The capital ''E'' in question,is a copy of the ''E'' font, employed by the Motorcycle daredevil and stunt jumper,'' Evel Knievel '' who,was at the height of a succesful career,at the time of the Zodiac's reign of terror.
Evel Knievel was seen as a pioneer,in a new form of motorsport...and it is presumed that the Zodiac was a hobbyist,as both a ''motorhead'' and ''petrolhead''.
Robert Knievel was born, raised, lived and died,in Butte,Montana...seen in effect as,Butte's most famous ''son''.Perhaps more than a coincidence then, that the Zodiac's first presumed ''direct'' engagement, with the FBI,was a correspondence, known as the ''San Jose letter and cryptogram'',sent on November 21st 1969,and believed to have originated from Butte,Montana.
In addition,it does seem likely that part of the Zodiac's inspiration for his ''evil'' antics with the use of a knife,in both deeds [Lake Berryessa] and correspondence [Car door,2nd Fairfield letter and Halloween Card.],originated from Evel Knievel,as well as Jack The Ripper.
