Zodiac ends his letter to The San Francisco Examiner,July 31st 1969,thus :
''.......I will go on a kill rampage Fry night.This will last the whole weekend,I will cruse around killing people who are alone at night untill Sun Night or untill I kill a dozen people.''
So,this letter's last two sentences contained both ''Fry night'' and ''Sun Night'',referring presumably,to ''Friday night'' and ''Sunday night''.
If it is the case that the ''Benicia High School note'' is an authentic piece of Zodiac writing,then ''BY SON'' or ''BYSON'' must surely refer to either Zodiac's son,or,as Ricardo has suggested,a person called ''Byson''.
The note is obviously not ''verbally fluid'',but ''Byson'' marginally makes more sense [?].If the author does kill ''Byson'',one could imagine wild dogs eating a corpse,not retrieved [?].
But then,that could be construed as buying too much into the literal nature of the message [?].
There is a camp of the Zodiac website community that believe that all ''Zodiac'' material that surfaces into the public domain,should be considered authentic,until proved otherwise.This,regardless of official authentication by ''The Authorities''.
Given that ''The Authorities'' have held back material,in the past,it is,perhaps,not an unreasonable philosophy [?].

It is certainly a difficult ''call'',Ricardo,but I'll give it my best shot :
In terms of ''intention'',I believe the note is designed to scare Benicia High School.Alternatively,the note may have been written,with the bomb threat as a ruse,to actually bring attention to the note,itself [?].
If I might indulge in a ''literal re-write'' of the note :
''I apologize,but ''Byson'' should have mentioned when he was going to blow up the school.So instead,I am going to blow it up,myself - between now and 22nd of December.In addition,I am going to kill ''Byson'',and you will find him up by Lake Herman Road.If you get up there,in time,you will find him before the dogs eat him - and I hope they do.''
''Guess who this is the blood of ?''
''You all die''
''Zodiac''
''P.S. I am going to 'do my thing' at queer school''

Even with a bit more ''literal licence'',the note still sounds ''manic'' [?].But the ''literal inference'' is that ''Byson'' and Zodiac are colluding to blow up the school.But ''Byson'' has let Zodiac down - so Zodiac is left to blow up the school,himself - which Zodiac intends to do - but also,now,extract vengeance on ''Byson'',for leaving it all to him.
So,I see two alternative interpretations,here :
i]A local ''idiot'',has decided to ''thrill seek'' by threatening Benicia High School,and attempting to pin the blame on Zodiac,whom he has studied - and probably admires [?].
ii]Zodiac himself,has written the note,as a ruse,to incriminate W.J.Grant,whom he is persecuting,by stealth,at the time.Zodiac has bought into the negative gossip about W.J.Grant,to press home the ''incrimination''.Zodiac leaves enough clues in the note,to [hopefully] convince the local police that,as ''Zodiac'',his identity is really W.J.Grant.But...here's the really ''warped'' part...Zodiac can't actually bring himself to present the note as written by someone [W.J.Grant],who is actually as smart as himself [!].Even though he is supposed to be convincing the police that W.J.Grant is the true person known as ''The Zodiac Killer''.

Just to take an intake of breath,I shall now try to answer your specific questions,Ricardo.
I believe that the ultimate,and intended recipients of the note,was the local police.The note represents a ''show'',by Zodiac,for the cops.At least a year had elapsed,by then,since W.J.Grant had secured his court order,protecting him from any form of harassment.Zodiac may well have ''lost the plot'',when enjoying his infamy and notoriety.The original plan had been to make W.J.Grant suffer a ''living hell''.This had been a personal vendetta,all along - but Zodiac had rather got carried away,with the spotlight on him.
Now,Zodiac was just left with trying to get under Grant's skin,at a ''local level'',and confounding and frustrating the cops,at the same time.Grant is known to have admitted that,after securing his court order,he always kept a shotgun in the boot of his car.To protect himself from whom,one wonders [?].
I believe that ''Byson'' was a made up name,and may not have made much sense to the police,at the time.But I do believe that Grant,at least,might have known what it [''Byson''] meant.But Grant,more than likely,never got to see the note,nor had any further dealings with the police,thereafter.Grant was just happy for his ''freedom'' from all the past ''police hassle'',and to get on with his life.
But it didn't prove to be ''plain sailing'' for Grant - there were one or two further problems.
The ''essence'' of my inference is that,had Grant been a bit more co-operative with the police,the case could have been solved.
But,as the saying goes : ''There were circumstances,dear boy - just circumstances.''.

For any readers following this thread,you haven't been left dangling on a piece of string [!].
There will be further ''revelations'' - more particular,an explanation for ''Byson'',which I believe,had perplexed the police for many years.Like the game ''Hunt the thimble'',it was actually staring them in the face,all along.But,one must bear in mind,that Law Enforcement were not even allowed to mention W.J.Grant's name,much less talk to him.This,since circa 1972 !
I do believe that the case of The Zodiac Killer will be solved,now.But exactly in which form,remains to be seen.
Technically,its solution is derived from the conviction,by trial,of a living person.
The Zodiac Killer still lives !
But his ''outing'' may not be as straightforward,as people might imagine.

Thanks for your “re-write”! It helps to understand the different ways the Benicia High School note can be interpreted.
The note could have been intended for whoever was the security guard at Benicia High School. I am just guessing that the security guard was the person who found the note.

Indeed Ricardo.So I understand,the note was pinned or stuck to the front doors of the school.
That would suggest that ''the author'',intended someone of responsibility,like a janitor or security guard,to be the first to see the note.
Therefore the note's safekeeping would be assured,and that it would inevitably be handed over to the police - which one assumes would be the author's intended recipients [?].
I can't help thinking that Zodiac probably gave W.J.Grant a ''ferocious'' hard time [?].If one reads Lafferty's book in the context of W.J.Grant being the victim of persecution by Zodiac,instead of Grant being Zodiac,it makes for ''eye watering'' stuff !
Not just physical impersonation to compound Grant's ''bad light'' - also the motorcars,which would have been car hiring to match Grant's ''then'' current model,complete with number plate switch,to match.And all the ''stalking'',to enable the ''illusions'',to come about.
The ''letter writing'' and ''puzzles by post'',were probably a ''walk in the park'', in comparison [?].Supposedly,Grant bought a copy of the S.F.Chronicle,every day...which might be part of the reason that it was the S.F.Chronicle,that received the ''lion's share'' of Zodiac mail [?].
Yes,I believe that Mr.William Joseph Grant,was made of ''sterner stuff'',than we think.He ''survived'' the ''living nightmare'' !

Just as an appendage to the ''phenomenon'' of the ''Benicia High School note'' :
The Bomb Threats by teenage delinquents,all seem to come about in a spate,about 1-2 years after the note was posted on the school's front doors.
It seems likely [?],that ''Zodiac's'' note went down into local or school ''folklore'',if not achieving wider attention.One could certainly imagine schoolkids gossiping about ''The day The Zodiac Killer paid their school a visit'',and inspiring ''irresponsible'' thoughts [?].
On a matter of Zodiac's probable postscript : ''IM GONA DO MY THING AT QIR SCHOOL''.I would suggest that this postscript is entirely in keeping with a ''contrived'' or real,sarcastic attitude to,and homophobic perception of,homosexuality [?].
The postscript is designed to hurt,or incriminate by prejudice.The inference being that,minority sexual preference is something that needs to be ''acquired'' or learned,through ''education''[?].
So,in examining the note,for possible authenticity,its connections appear to relate to :
i]The Dripping Pen Card [ ''do my Thing !!!'']
ii]The Halloween Card [''BY SON'',as a ''by'' statement ]
iii]The Riverside Confession [ ''ABOUT TIME'' ]
iv] The bomb threat references,in past letters,by Zodiac.
v]The Paul Stine confession,with bloodied shirt sample,adding credence,with ''blood evidence''.
If any of the five connections were not generally known,till after the Benicia High School note,is known to have been delivered [circa 1972-1973...and perhaps as early as Autumn 1972,with a reference to 22nd of DEC [?],then could any interested readers post information,here ?

The use of ''BY SON''.Well,most of us are aware that Zodiac employed ''FRY'' as an abbreviated form of the word ''Friday''.So,was ''SON'',an abbreviated form for ''Sunday'' ? One would have thought that Zodiac would have employed ''SUN'',if this was the case [?].Is it possible that ''Zodiac'' was referring to his male progeny ? ''Zodiac'' states : ''If you get up their in time you will find him before dog eat him up....''.Is ''Zodiac'' actually referring to ''his'' son,or a bomb,since ''By Sunday'' doesn't make much sense,in the context of the message. There is some unusual wording in this note. The “by son” wording could have been intended to be a variant of “by fire”, “by gun”, “by knife”, and “by rope”. "So I kill by son…" * * * Or maybe “Byson” is someone’s name? "(I'm sorry) but Byson soud of said anything."  "So I kill Byson and you will find him up by Lake Herman Road."  There is another possibility about the “by son” or “byson” wording. I was talking with someone who lives in Vallejo who told me that there was one bison at a ranch on Lake Herman Road in the early 1970s. This note could be referring to the animal. “So I kill bison and you will find him up by Lake Herman Road.” I would like to find out the dates when the bison was at the ranch on Lake Herman Road and what happened to it.  |

But,one only has to examine the Benicia High School note.As you,yourself have highlighted,''The Author'' as written the word,as both ''BYSON'',and ''BY SON''.
Perhaps,a ''wordplay'' on ''Bison'',is stretching the possibilities,a bit far [?].
Once ''The Solution'' to The 1990 Celebrity Cipher is illustrated on this site,readers might have an opportunity to view the meaning intended,from another ''angle'' [?].

Just to dwell on the ''Bison'' angle,for a moment :
The second half of the note,gives more credence,to this,with the line : ''So I kill Byson and you find him up by Lake Herman Road ''.
If,for example,the Bison that Ricardo refers to,was a valuable Prize Bull,and a bit of a ''local celebrity'',one could imagine initial ''horror'' [...as if though,the very notion of blowing up a school,wasn't already so [!]....].And the blood on the note,might compound this ''horror'' [?].
But,of course,the the initial part of the note ''contradicts'',with the inference that ''Byson'' was going to blow up the school - a bovine animal [?].
Nevertheless,it is a very strange note [?].I have seen ''Zodiac's'' employment of ''GONA''in,at least one letter [....mentioned twice,I believe...].The usual spelling of ''going to'',in the vernacular,is ''GONNA''.
So,''GONA'' in itself is a bit unusual,and adds credence to ''authentic Zodiac'' [?].

The meaning of the Benicia High School note is cryptic.
The “by son” or “byson” wording could be an example of wordplay.
I am open to the idea that it could have two meanings in the context of the note.
(1) a reference to killing the bison at the ranch on Lake Herman Road
and
(2) a reference to being killed by someone’s son

All matters considered,and with acknowledgement of Ricardo's last post,The Benicia High School note is a message,purportedly authored by someone claiming to be Zodiac,and referring to himself and a ''partner in crime'',whom the author names as ''BYSON''.
The message is undoubtedly cryptic and,whether deliberate or not,gives rise to ambiguity in interpretation.
Misspelling of known words,as well as obvious poor grammar,leaves the name of ''Zodiac's'' claimed ''colluder'' open to interpretation,also.
It is all too apparent that engendering ''alarm'',was the primary intention of the message.
Was ''BYSON'' a reference to a local Bison,which appears to have been regarded with affection,locally,and,more than likely,represented a valuable investment ?
The murder of a celebrated animal,in the annals of serious crime,is not unique.The famous case of ''Who killed Shergar ?'' comes to mind,when a racehorse was kidnapped,and subsequently destroyed,by a provisional wing of The Irish Republican Army.
Was ''BYSON'' a person of this name,or a claimed son of the author of the note,who in addition,claimed was the real perpetrator of the crimes associated with himself,''Zodiac'' ?
Lyndon Lafferty suggested that he was fortunate to have acquired copies of both the Benicia High School note,and The Celebrity Cipher,from a Police Sergeant belonging The Vallejo Police,giving apologies to the Sergeant in his book,if his ''...ass got chewed for allowing me to take them.''.
I contend that Lafferty was ''fed'' the two copied documents,without his true knowledge of reason.Evidence of this may have come to light now,depending on whether the recent ''new solution'' to The Celebrity Cipher,posted by Ricardo in this section,is to be believed.US Federal Law Enforcement have knowledge of this ''new solution'',and have been in possession of this knowledge,for almost two years.''Quantico'' will be all too aware of that which lies behind the postage stamp on The Celebrity Cipher postcard,since they hold physical possession of the original card.
This being three symbols denoting ''Mister Zodiac'',which translates into the word ''SON''.A solution,finally perhaps,to the connection and ''reasoning'',behind the Benicia High School note,and The 1990 Celebrity Cipher [?].

As an extension of my previous post,it had occurred to me,that any readers following this part of the thread,might be interested to know,why it is,that I believe that Federal Law Enforcement,may have elected to ''feed'' Lyndon Lafferty,both a copy of The Benicia High School note,and a copy of The Celebrity Cipher.
I cannot see,so far,any justification from Lafferty,in his book,apart from believing that The Vallejo Police were convinced of a ''connection''.Would these two unauthenticated Zodiac correspondences have emerged,without Lafferty's assistance ? All we can assume is,like Lafferty,his previous employers,The Vallejo Police Department,gave him special dispensation,to acquire copies,of the copies they held.The originals,by then,being in possession of the FBI.
Beyond opinion,at ''face value'',of any similarities between the note,and the cipher,what do we have ? Well,the note emerged from Benicia High School,and the cipher from the offices of [now] The Vallejo Times,having,I believe,been posted from Oakland.
Therefore,what ''we'' actually have is the distance between Benicia and Oakland - and a difference in time frame of about 18 years.
Having now illustrated that a probable connection,through offering a ''credible'' solution to the Celebrity Cipher,is,at the very least,the word ''SON'',it then begs the question of why it was that Law Enforcement,might have sought ''extra'' information,by feeding the two copies to Lafferty.
Apart from Law Enforcement not having succeeded in deciphering The Celebrity Cipher,there appears to be one reason,and one reason alone :
That Law Enforcement had found a ''forensics'' match,between The Benicia High School note,and The Celebrity Cipher.
Two ''Zodiac related'' documents - Just a few miles,and 18 years apart.

I have to admit,that ''alarm bells'' did go off,for me,with ''AIR SCHOOL''.Lyndon Lafferty never did really pin Grant down accurately,with regard to Grant's WWII record.Lafferty pretty much had Grant ''back to front'' on that,relying mostly on conversations with Grant,himself,through social occasions,forced upon Lafferty [!],with respect to the friendship between his wife,Yvonne,and Grant's wife Marion. As Lafferty admitted,on these occasions,he would always ''pack a weapon'' [!].But one bonus for ''us'' is that we learned that Grant also taught ''Gunner's weaponary''. From extensive research,including a coded abbreviated war record,at Grant's War Veteran's site,I have narrowed down Grant's teaching placement to San Antonio,and more than likely,the Air Training College there,during WWII. I think it unlikely that the branch and department of US Federal Law Enforcement,will give up Grant's full war record.Perhaps,lucky for them that Grant died,without a recognized ''blood'' relative,who ''would'' have had legal rights to access this information [?]. But,more to the point,how is it that,whoever did write that ''Benicia High School note'',in addition to understanding various ''quirks'' of Zodiac,probably knew about W.J.Grant's wartime activities ? ''AIR SCHOOL'' - whatever else,could it mean ? It could mean something else. It could mean “our school” (not “air school”). “Im gona do my thing at oir school.” Air school could mean air combat training school seems like there was a war over seas in the 60's we went to like Copter rear door gunner training for Air Cav. do you know those R door gunners wore a hood over the face and all the way to the belt ( just like ...you know )as the 1500 degree brasses were a bea otch if they went down the shirt , black colored ones to keep the V/C from picking up the gunner as quick . look at some of the rear guns site it was a circle with a wire cross and the leading wire left long and angled down so to pick up a target at 50 mph I read because it was a heavy causalty position they were given passes back home quite a bit & in the fall here as it was too rainy over there. |
