i'd bet the thing to take out of the Mikado is "three little maids are we" three that will/like to kill
weren't there some asian horse figures or art in the Mikado ? I know I saw some at one time , but cannot find them again , but then it is done locally too

I am a believer in Lyndon Lafferty's ''library investigations''.More specifically, that Zodiac impersonated W.J.Grant,and withdrew, thereafter holding on to,''The Mikado'' LP from JFK Library,Vallejo [02-05-68 - 03-17-70],and Kahn's Codebreakers book from Fairfield's Solano County Library [02-13-68 - 08-20-69]. What ''gets me'' everytime,is ''The Mikado'' LP.That person [Zodiac [?]],would not have held on to it [...and checking it in and out ten times..],if they were staying at a hotel or guest house.''Zodiac'' must have had the ''semblance'' of a semi-permanent and private residence.AND,if he liked the LP so much, why didn't he,in all that time, find a copy to purchase [?]. You refer to “The Mikado” LP which was obtained from the library in Vallejo. Who were the singers on this particular LP and what year was it released?

Lyndon Lafferty carried out his ''library investigations'' in 1975.
So it is my understanding, once Lafferty had pieced together all the ''evidence'' [Library cards, with signatory's signature ; Code book ; LP record],he and the Libraries, dutifully handed it over to the police.
So,evidence ''confiscated'',and Lafferty did not specify the particular production of ''The Mikado'',on LP record.
The name most associated with the songwriters William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan,is the Victorian impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte. The three of them, effectively, were responsible for the productions,in the 19th Century, and the traveling ''troop'' of musicians, actors and singers, was known as The D'Oyly Carte Company. This Company still exists to-day,and a ''premier'' recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's work, would, more than likely,be recorded by the D'Oyly Carte Company.
Interestingly, there was,in existence, during the ''reign'' of Zodiac,in San Francisco,a theater company that specialized in Gilbert and Sullivan productions.Apparently, law Enforcement went through every company member,''with a fine tooth comb''.But,they didn't look beyond San Francisco.

In 1968, the library might have kept different recordings of “The Mikado” by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. One could have been the 1957 version of “the Mikado” by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. gasdisc.oakapplepress.com/mik1957.htmAlso, there were other artists who had recordings of “The Mikado”. gasdisc.oakapplepress.com/mik.htm

The Zodiac killer could have went to see “The Mikado when it was performed by the Lamplighters in San Francisco in 1969.

That's interesting,Ricardo. One senses that Zodiac was a ''loner'',in his life as a ''working resident'' [?],of the San Francisco vicinity.
But,someone who didn't sit around and ''mope'' [?].He got out and about, educating and entertaining his mind [?].
San Francisco was so ''culturally rich'',at that time - and Zodiac, almost definitely a daily newspaper reader, would have constantly been informing himself,of what was currently on show.

That 1957 recording of ''The Mikado'' is very familiar to me,Ricardo.
As a young child,my father had a copy, which he played ''to death'' [!].That, and The Everly Brothers was my musical upbringing, until The Beatles came along - and then, like many,I was in love, for the first time.
So,I believe there was a big revival of Gilbert and Sullivan,in the fifties - in the wake of the huge popularity of show tunes from Rogers and Hammerstein.
Richard D'Oyly Carte was a ''shrewd operator'',and knew that he had a winning team,on his hands. In fact,as a result of the success of Gilbert and Sullivan,he built The Savoy Theatre,in London,so that the opera company had a more permanent place to perform. Then D'Oyly Carte built The Savoy Hotel, next door [!],so that wealthy theatergoers could make a night of the occasion.
Lyndon Lafferty suggests that Zodiac had a ''Dictaphone'' to assist him to hear lyrics from The Mikado, which he then wrote down,But,of course,Zodiac made a few errors.I think it more likely that Zodiac just played The Mikado LP so often [...like my father...],that he thought he had every word memorized.
This comes to mind that the latter half of the sixties saw the advent of The Audio Cassette recorder/player.
I am working on ''evidence'' that Zodiac refers to this new technology.
For a later time...

Gilbert and Sullivan's “The Mikado” performed by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company with the New Symphony Orchestra of London conducted by Isidore Godfrey was recorded in October of 1957 and the London album was issued in 1958. The Mikado (Act 1)(1958)
The Mikado (Act 2)(1958)

Excellent that you have managed to post the most successful post-war recording,of ''The Mikado'',Ricardo.
A useful reference,with Zodiac's ''inaccuracies''in quoting lyrics,from ''A Little List''.
Why Zodiac went to all that trouble,in quoting much of the song,is beyond most people. The ''naughtiness'' and eccentricities of the words,no doubt, made Zodiac feel that he was being ''daring'' and a bit more ''sophisticated'',than what many were into, during that late sixties period [?].
Another sign,I feel that Zodiac may have been ''mid twenties'' in age, attempting to give the impression of being of more ''mature'' years.Still,a lot on offer for the handwriting experts, and plentiful examples of Zodiac's misspellings.
Lyndon Lafferty did talk about the LP from JFK Library,Vallejo, being ''quite scratched''.The Library, more likely, had acquired it ten years prior, with plentiful use,in its first years [circa 1960].People did supplement their music collections,on a borrowing basis, more readily, with the purchasing costs of music, much higher, then.
Hopefully,we can find out the signed name on the library card,of William Grant's impostor [?].''Someone'' Grant, anyway.
Perhaps,a further clue awaits [?].
Who has access to Lyndon Lafferty's confident,Jerry Johnson ?

So,what of the derivation of the ''The Mikado'' ?
Literally, and from Japanese,''Mikado'' means honorable gate or portal, putting the two words ''mi'' and ''kado'' together.
''Mikado'' was more often used as the term for the Emperor,in a sort of nebulous way.In fact,it has also been used as the expression ''Son of Heaven'',which, strikes resonance for those interested in a possible satanic side to Zodiac.Whereas the Antichrist was the ''Son of Hell'',then ''The Mikado'' could have been seen as his benevolent opposite [?].
There are further, less high profile meanings, such as a very specific type of Steam Locomotive train, and the game, known for commonly in the West as,''Pick-Up Sticks''.
But,for a further possible influence on Zodiac,we should perhaps, delve into the world of comic magazines, where we can find a serial killer, known as ''The Mikado'',as brought to life by DC Comics.
''The Mikado'' was a ''nome de guerre'' used by a certain Dr.Jerry T.Spaulding, who took to violent acts against those who perpetrated violence,in a place called Hub City. His nemesis being a law enforcer, known as ''The Question''.
The inspiration for this serial killing doctor, came from the story of intrepid explorer,Captain Jeffrey T.Spaulding,as played by Grouch Marx,in the film ''Animal Crackers''.
Interestingly, legendary comedian Marx, also played the character ''Ko-Ko'',in the 1960 Television adaptation of ''The Mikado''.
For Zodiac followers, one might note that the ''Eureka'' Christmas card, posted to The SF Chronicle in December 1990,depicted a snowman resembling Grouch Marx.
Though officially, unauthenticated, this card included the term ''Secret Pal'',and is generally assumed to have been sent by the infamous serial killer, himself.
A ''Mikado - Groucho Marx - Zodiac'' connection,then [?].

According to Lyndon Lafferty’s book The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up, in 1975, the Vallejo library had the 1963 version of “the Mikado” by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. Some interesting information posted,Ricardo.
I understand that Grouch Marx was a life long fan of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. So,it must have been an honor for him to play the part of Ko-Ko,in ''The Mikado''.
It might also be of interest, that Marx hosted the popular radio show,''You bet your life'',from 1947 to 1961.So,at a time, perhaps, that Zodiac was ''growing up'',Marx was a weekly part of his life [?].A person of ''iconic status'' [?].
Lafferty's investigative library work, was to illustrate that it was the recording of ''The Mikado'',in LP format, that was responsible for Zodiac's decision to quote lyrics,in his correspondence.I am convinced that Lafferty was correct,in this assessment.
The ''bonus'' that Lafferty laid bare, was that Zodiac impersonated William Grant,in order to borrow the LP from the JFK Library,Vallejo.
The ''unforeseen'' was that ''Zodiac'' signed the library card,in William Grant's name. But,as Lafferty informed us,it was signed, using a different Christian name, than ''William''.
The Christian name employed, might give us a further clue about Zodiac.

On the back of Zodiac's Halloween Card, addressed to Paul Avery, there is a composition of words, displayed vertically.
If the reader ''elects'' to read horizontally, some short words appear to emerge.Whether this is by accident,or design,we are unsure.
One ''composite word'' that appears,is ''NCP''.Commonly, recognized as the abbreviation for ''Nincompoop'' - a stupid or foolish person, derived from the Latin expression ''non compos mentis'',meaning ''not having sound mind''.
It is believed that the word ''Nincompoop'' inspired the name ''Nanki-Poo'',in Gilbert and Sullivan's ''The Mikado''.
Nanki-Poo was the son and heir to the Emperor,''The Mikado'',and regarded as a ''wandering minstrel'',smitten by the charms of ''Yum-Yum'',a young maiden, promised by engagement to ''Ko-ko''.
The Opera opens, with local Japanese noblemen, being questioned about the whereabouts of Nanki-Poo.
They answer with : ''He's gone abroad.''.
''NCP'' may be a mere accident of emergence,on The Halloween Card.
But,could it be more than a coincidence ?
Not least,parallels between Nanki-Poo and Zodiac ?
Did Zodiac feel ''promised'' to Darlene ?
Was Zodiac a ''wandering''person,sometimes ''abroad'' ?
Whose son was he ?

Thats very interesting ( the he's gone abroad ,opening of the play) I say your right.
San Fran to Da nang is my guess My Dad came back from ww2 and stayed in the SF area trying to make it there for 2 months ,instead of returning to the rural midwest and 100 degree heat ,that must have looked good to a vietnam vet too.
