News to-day,that scientists at Liverpool's John Moore's University, are claiming the identity of ''Jack the Ripper'' to be Polish barber,Aaron Kosminski.
After analysis of a shawl, found at the crime scene of victim,Catherine Eddowes,it is believed that DNA extracted from the shawl, confirms the identity of the victim and Kosminski.
The case of Jack the Ripper remains open, after 130 years, and comes under the jurisdiction of the London Metropolitan Police.
Many claims of ''Jack'' 's identity have been made, over the years, including that of Patricia Cornwell, who pointed the finger at fine painter,Walter Sickert, after spending $6 million on paintings,at auction, and then proceeding to destroy them,in order to extract Sickert's DNA.
The infamous serial killer is believed to have murdered, between 5 and 18 women, starting two days following the London premiere of Robert Louis Stevenson's '' The strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde '',opening as a play, adapted from Stevenson's short story.
The London Metropolitan Police are, unofficially,''not'' convinced that the perpetrator and writer of many letters in blood or red ink,to be one and the same person.
During ''The Ripper'' 's reign of terror,in the Whitechapel area of London,a frenzy of interest and letter writing started,by those convinced that they knew the killer's identity.Newspapers and the police were deluged with mail.Perhaps,of its time, little different to the social media phenomenon now created,in the wake of The Zodiac Killer.
Opinions included those of famous figures of the day.Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, for example, took a keen interest in the case, and his opinions were often published.Conan Doyle tended to believe that ''Jack'' was actually a woman, and this was sometimes reflected in print, with ''Jack'' referred to,as '' Jill the Ripper ''.
