There is a new development regarding the unknown man who used the identity of Joseph Newton Chandler III beginning on September 25, 1978. A U.S. Marshal claims that a forensic genealogist has been able to link the unknown man to the paternal last name “Nicholas” or “Nichols”. www.wkyc.com/news/local/first-look-infamous-cleveland-cold-case-suspect-may-be-named/372013817Some people have suggested that this unknown man could have been the Zodiac killer or another criminal.

It sounds like an intriguing, but very sad case,Ricardo.
Robert Ivan Nichols appears to have held a secret, for which he was deeply ashamed.
One's initial inclination is,that he suffered from depression, and saw himself as a burden on others.
The single penny could be explained,as symbolic of him excusing himself from actual contact,on account of only turning up,like a ''bad penny'' [?].
It will be interesting to hear if the authorities can shed more light on this case.

Just some random thoughts on Robert Ivan Nichols: Was he ever stationed at Treasure Island anytime during his Navel career? I remember reading that one possible Z influence may have been Dr. Zodiac from the movie Charlie Chan at Treasure Island. Thoughts?

Nice to hear, that contributors, such as you,Seastooge, take an interest in the mystery over Mr.Nichols.
If I find out anything of relevance,I will post. But I think it extremely unlikely that Mr.Nichols held any connection to the Zodiac.
Perhaps now,we will have that aspect confirmed. From a point of Zodiac investigations, that should be one less ''suspect'' [?].
With this recent excitement over the probable outing of the Golden State Killer,I find it ''reprehensible'' that one or two Zodiac site contributors,on the flimsiest basis,of ''Hearsay'',are claiming that the DNA work, carried out in 2002,counts for nothing.
In 2002,Robert Mueller of the FBI and the CA DOJ,both gave President Bush assurances that they did have the DNA profile of the man believed to be the Zodiac Killer.Even without much knowledge of forensics, most people would understand that this knowledge would have been obtained, though multiple laboratory trials and crosschecks with suspected related crimes, such as the Bay Area ones.
The fact that some individuals were unhappy with the outcomes,is neither here nor there.
Lyndon Lafferty was unhappy that William Grant was eliminated.Tom Voigt and Robert Graysmith were unhappy that Arthur Leigh Allen was eliminated.Other ''minor'' suspects, including ''Mr.X'' were now, effectively, out of contention.
And yet, there are those, including supporters of well known POI's,who have never been of interest as actual suspects, still insist on keeping their misguided hopes alive [!].
Time to get real....and cut out the fabricated claims that just keep speculation, unhealthily expanded.
But indeed,Robert Ivan Nichols looks like a sad case,on its own merits.
And,needs to be fully resolved.
