I and my family went to the zodiac attack sites in June 71 ,to take many pictures for a girl cousin that had revamped a weekly newspaper in the Osark hills , she wanted panoramic pics ,it would sell lots of papers.
We also went to D land.
When there we were looking at where Darlines Corvair was parked that night,
Other cars were parking in the crowded lot then people told them thats were the couple was shot and no one parks there anymore so they ran to move it. 2 different cars did this ,
well mom and Dad had taken some pics , a medium dark 66 ? Corvair came past 5 mph and dad leerd at the late 20s woman driving it , a petite buxom cutie / tank top ,had a tattoo , her boyfriend/ husband kinda muscle ly in a tank top , Mom got after Dad for noticing her too long , he just said " that would be a great pic if they had parked at the spot" a substitute Darline & Mike .
I wonder if its possible thats just what happened that nite Zodiac thought it was this shadier couple in a identical Corvair , he already deciding to shoot them ,
or still thought it was this couple we saw as he started shooting.

Excellent contribution Davb3, and these are the sorts of reportages that bring elements of the case back to life.
About three years ago, someone posted a story about their father who, got caught in the tailback of traffic along Washington Street, shortly after the murder of Paul Stine. The police had immediately kept one side of the road clear for emergency services, and the traffic came to a standstill for about two hours. The contributor had been a baby in the back seat of his fathers car and, recounted the story from what his father had told him.
Eventually, the cars tailed back were allowed to continue their journey, and Dave Toschi approached some of the vehicles to apologise for the circumstances. This included the contributor's father, whose car roof Toschi gave a friendly tap. When his father returned home, he became most annoyed. It transpires that Toschi had tapped with his hand which, held his wedding ring and, was responsible for chipping paintwork off his father's car roof.
My inclinations are, that Mike and Darlene were waiting for a modest pick-up of a bag of weed, on the evening of the BRS attack. The Zodiac knew Darlene, and had grown increasingly concerned that she might go to the police with suspicion of the Zodiac being responsible for LHR. She probably had no such intention, but the Zodiac had been trawling around in his car, looking for her. A great tragedy of misunderstanding.

This matter of whether the Zodiac knew Darlene, will always be a contentious one, until a confirmed truth either way emerges.
Without meaning to create a wide debate ( though any contributions gratefully received ), it may be of interest, and confirmed by Darlene's family, that Darlene had only just passed her driving test, and the Corvair referred was on loan from her father-in-law at the time of her murder.
Would the Zodiac have known this ? Still quite likely. There are, albeit unconfirmed reports, that a man with some car mechanics experience, assisted Darlene with a problem concerning her car, on the morning of July 4th - perhaps only about 18 hours before her death.
The inference being, that the Zodiac might have spotted Darlene at distance, simply by his ability to recognise the car she was using.

I bet this girl and couple got wide eyed looks driving around Vallejo in the Corvair after this , but corvairs were pretty common then too
I remember men hating the air cooled VW and noisier Corvair 6cyl engines then ,noisier they smoked more usually , very annoying at a stoplite. My Dad would cuss at them , Could be the reason he/ they killed wonder where that Corvair is ?

Certainly interesting car comments, Davb3.
One thing is pretty sure, I would think - is that the Zodiac's rented private accommodation still exists in Vallejo. Probably in the south of the town, with a good view of Mare Island, and a spacious garage. I believe that the Zodiac was already married, with a baby son, by the time of the Lake Herman Road attack - but, in all his time spent in the Bay area, I bet he never brought his family to stay - perhaps explaining that his residency was strictly '' bachelor '' accommodation ?
Hearst weasel Kevin Fagan promised me a hook-up with Mr Graysmith - then made apologies, on his behalf. I was really only interested in him, because I had heard that he is one of only two people in the public domain, to possess student enrolment information on Riverside College. I believe that the Zodiac enlisted for a short course, probably a welders certificate, mid-1966, and well before Cheri Jo's murder.
I think few begrudge Mr Graysmith's success - he became a great writer, of the diary genre. But it does appear now, that the Zodiac did start begrudging him - mostly to do with Graysmith's knowing inaccuracies. By 2002 and Graysmith's second Zodiac book, Graysmith must have known that he was walking on dodgy ground, with his Arthur Leigh Allen theory. But, publishers can be particularly persuasive people - certainly when it comes to offering money in return for a required product.
