To point readers in another direction, with regard to symbols ''pilfered'' by Zodiac, for use in his ciphers, one might like to examine the Alchemical symbols denoting elements and compounds in the science of Alchemy.
These symbols were employed up to the 18th Century, when Alchemy became largely absorbed into the new science of Chemistry.
Examples : Triangle = FIRE,Circle,with dot = GOLD,Square,with dot = URINE
More ''proof'' of Zodiac's eclecticism in choices of cipher symbols employed.

Am I missing something here? I don't see Zodiac pe=planning not only the murderous rampage, but in 1967 through to the end of 68 He's touring the Libraries of The Bay area because He can't be intuitive enough to come up with a few symbols of his own or just, if needed, go out and get one singular copy of Fletcher Pratt's 'Secret and Urgent' and He's done?

This book - ''Secret and Urgent'' - sounds interesting,WelshChappie. Please share the content to which you refer [?].
If their is a single codes book that Zodiac referenced,it does appear to be ''The Code Breakers - The Story of Secret Writing'' by David Kahn.
In a Zodiac documentary interviewing Detective Inspector Kelly Carroll [...whom with DI Mike Malloney worked on the case about 15 years ago...],there are some reference samples on his desk including the Halloween Card AND a book jacket of ''The Code Breakers''.
''The Code Breakers'' is of course, the book Lyndon Lafferty found at Fairfield Civic Library, having been held on to 1968-1969 by someone impersonating William Grant.
In addition, there is a scene in the 2007 film, where Graysmith and Avery are having a drink, with Graysmith holding a copy of ''The Code Breakers''.So,if research is faithful,''The Code Breakers'' even makes a cameo appearance [!].
Any jokes apart,it does look likely that Zodiac referenced David Kahn's book, and probably borrowed it from Fairfield Civic Library, under a false name.

Well, Don Harden had A fairy keen, yet Amateur, interest in cryptography, and Don Harden used that knowledge and His personal favorite Code Construction and decoding book as a reference to assist His de-coding of Z's 408 and that book Harden Used was
Fletcher Pratt's Secret & Urgent.
If you require it, I have the link to Don & Bettye's Daughter at a Zodiac Convention stating it. I'll post if you need/want it

That Harden had a reference book of choice [Secret and Urgent],is an interesting piece of information,WelshChappie.
Harden,of course, was a teacher with,no great claims to codes apart from a general interest. His perceived honesty is in contrast to some individuals who try to persuade us that they have a wealth of experience in cryptography.
Going back to the period 1945 - 1975,when ''telex'' was king,a job description ''Codes Clerk'' was well known.Large companies would employ a small group of workers, usually from the typing pool,to send coded messages to other branches of their organization.A clerk merely had to become familiar with a company codes manual. It just happened to be a time when there was a certain paranoia about competitors.Hardly the stuff of intrigue [!].
More to the point, like Harden,it is most unlikely that Zodiac was anything more than an interested amateur in codes.
I agree that Zodiac did not go ''shopping''as such, for code symbols. But it is likely that he was on the ''look out''for unique ones to add to his ''stash''.These he might come across in his liking for hanging out at libraries, where a wealth of reading options would be his for the taking [?].
Though using the term ''Phantom Library User''in jest,I believe that there is more than a ring of truth to this.Libraries represented a ''happy hunting ground''for Zodiac.
The jury is out over Zodiac's actual ''Riverside Activities'',but Law Enforcement remain confident that Zodiac was the scribe of the Desk Top poem.At the very least, another example of Zodiac's library habituation [?].

Food for thought on EBEORIETEMETHHPITI :
These final 18 alphabetic letters, which constitute a mystifying solution to the end of Zodiac's ''408'',are more often than not, seen as an anagram to be solved, providing a postscript to a message, already laid out.
I have already proposed the possibility that Zodiac, referring himself to The Vallejo Police as ''Robert H.'',from San Francisco, proffered a solution as ''THE TIP I'M ROBERT E EEE'',and further suggested that ''Zodiac's'' surname might be ''FOURIE''.
All a bit strange, given that ''Robert H.'' had come up with this ''ribbon tied'' solution within three hours of the Hardens' solution appearing on The Newspaper stands,on the morning of The SF Chronicle's published solution [?].
Perhaps EBEORIETEMETHHPITI was not an anagram,at all [?].
It has been well documented that a common form of message, usually left by someone departing, either rushed or in a weakened state,is presented in ''initialized'' form. For example,''OFWAIH'' - ''Our Father, which art in Heaven''.
Perhaps EBEORIETEMETHHPITI could be viewed similarly [?].
Something along the lines of ''Evil begets evil OR it's easy to enrage ME to harm Highway Policemen in the interim.'' [?].
An initialized message could be its key [?]
''Will no man rid me of this meddlesome priest ?'' [!!!!!].

If my ''postscript'' to the previous post appeared obscure,it does of course, refer to Henry II's frustrated utterance, which led to his best friend and appointed Archbishop of Canterbury,Thomas Becket, being slain by Henry's knights.
But equally, could be a motto for frustrated Zodiac enthusiasts [?!]
I have visited the Cathedral where this infamous act took place. Its interior is ''stunning'',though a constant distraction can be the vergers pointing,on request of the tourists : ''Where did it happen ?''.

As a further overview of the ''340'':
I have intimated an opinion,in the past, that although Zodiac's mistakes in attempting to produce a coherent solution message, are plentiful, there are certainly possibilities of entangling the ''340''into something lucid and meaningful.
I would suggest that previous attempts, represent ''solvers' '' inclination to ''jump ship'' too soon - and settle for a largely ''anagramic'' interpretation.I believe that the anagram parts are an inevitable element, due to Zodiac's mistakes, but there is,perhaps 40% - 50% of the ''340'' that still translates in a recognizable form.I have found this to be the case, anyway.
In addition to other considerations,I further suggest that anyone attempting the ''340'',put themselves in the ''time frame'',in order to assist themselves [?].
The ''340'' was published in November 1969.What was happening at the time, both in the general area of San Francisco, and within the context of the Zodiac case,in particular ? This information could have bearings on content of the ''340's'' solution.
Near the end of the ''340'' there appears to be a reference to a ''strike'',which leaves Zodiac concerned about posting mail.I note, through historic articles from newspapers, and indeed, recent references posted on sites,of a police and firefighters industrial strike that took place in Vallejo, only three months prior to the ''340's'' emergence. This industrial strike had followed one in Kansas City, six months prior to that. So,clearly there was a ''Industrial unrest'' in the air.
Even ''Historical context'' can assist with clues,in grappling with the ''imperfect'' ''340'' [?].

Alan Turing, the mathematician, who notably broke the Nazi's Enigma code, had, like most mathematical theorists,no formal training in cryptography. For its rudiments all lie in the study of Advanced Algebra. In effect,Mr.Turing became a pioneer in ''Applications'' of mathematics, with respect to computer science.
In attempting his monumental feat,Turing surmised that coded messages emanating from the Nazi Reich would all contain ''Heil Hitler''- and prioritized this as a fundamental premise. He was correct.
There are a few Applied Mathematicians on the Zodiac websites, that forever go through the motions of cryptological studying of Zodiac's ciphers. They run tests and make perceived adjustments of requirement. They harm no one.
I do wonder, though, what are the bases for their premises ? That, for example,Zodiac played by the rules ?
For the most part, the ''408''was constructed ''by the rules''.But Zodiac found that it was solved easily.I would suggest that he,at least, hoped to buy himself a little more time to dream up something new,and may well have felt a little humiliation in the ''408's'' facile nature [?].
For what it may be worth,I have found that Zodiac's employment of the alphabet in the solution to the ''340'',runs to only two thirds of alphabetic letters.
In addition a,so far unauthenticated cipher solution, believed to be attributed to Zodiac - and of more than 60 symbols, contains only four of the five official vowels. This solution will be published in due course.
As a proffered suggestion to any applied mathematicians and computer science ''buffs'' reading. What you are embarking on,is all very well and noble.
But,have you really thought it all out ? Zodiac may be watching in ''bewonderment'' - and with a smile on his face.

Here's a joke that I just created - though I really don't know if it actually exists,or indeed,is even funny :
A Buick 60 series Riviera Coupe asks : ''You twenty are sick, forty,a Klu Klux ? ''.
Mystified ?
In a so far unauthenticated letter, dated December 7th,and known more commonly as one of two ''Fairfield letters'',Zodiac wrote :
''This is the Zodiac speaking I just need help I will kill again so expect it any time now the will be a cop then I will turn myself in ok ''
This message was followed by a cipher, now referred to as Z38.
I put no great conviction on the following solution, and know little about cars [...though know about the habits of ''petrolheads'' and ''motorheads''....].
The solution is only a ''possibility'',in that it contains exclusivity of substitution, and therefore it could be considered ''viable''.
The solution :
A BUICK XRVLXC
ASKS YOU
XX ARE
SICK XL
A KLU KLX
...just homing in on the use of Roman numerals [...LX [60],XX [20],XL [40]...],and Zodiac's ''penchant'' for all things ''roadworthy''.
At 38 symbols,there could be a number of ''fluid'' solutions,but something,nevertheless,to consider [?].

....of course,I'm suddenly starting to get interested in these ''Fairfield letters''.The second, posted nine days later [December 16th 1969],talked about the State being in trouble, and listed Zodiac's intentions, including killing three cops in Fairfield.
As Zodiac enthusiasts are aware,Fairfield is associated with being the residence of ''one'' W.J.Grant.A man,I believe was being persecuted,by Zodiac, himself.
Perhaps, with the first letter, the Buick 60 series Riviera Coupe, was a car of significance [?]. [....any takers here ?...].
At one time,I gather that ''Buick'' jokes were ''de rigeur''.Perhaps, the message is a dig at the cops, again [?].A bunch of ''sickos'' and '' Clue Klutz's '' [?].
If the ''solution'' to the first letter's cipher [Z38],is transferred to the second letter, there is a small cipher, that translates as KARVR AAAA.
Mr. Grant was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and became a speaker of this organization [AA].So,perhaps KARVR AAAA is Car Vehicle Registration Alcoholics Anonymous [reiterated] [?].
And it may be the case, that after Zodiac infers that Mr.Grant is a ''lush'',he goes on to accuse him of being ''queer'' [?].[Refer:Benicia High School note].

With reference to possible Zodiac cars at Lake Berryessa, about three months before the Fairfield letters,a generally reported 1966 2-door Chevrolet Sedan, appears to be most commonly reported car.Whether this particular model was reported, independent of police consultation,we may never know.
Two other models suggested, and similar looking to the 1966 2-door Chevrolet Sedan, are a 1960's Corvair and a 1962 Buick Skylark Coupe.
All three models are 2-door,hard top,and made by General Motors.
One wonders what model of car,was registered to Mr.W.J.Grant,at that time [?].
Any contributions to ''Zodiac cars'' or Fairfield letters, would be welcome.

As far as I am aware, the two ''Fairfield letters'' [ 7th and 16th December 1969 ],were sent to the San Francisco Chronicle. And,at the same time [ 16th December 1969 ] ''The Bleeding Knife'' illustration, was addressed to the S F Chronicle,S F Examiner and Vallejo Times - but, with specific attention of ''Paul Averly ''.
It is palpably clear that ''Knife'' in ''The Bleeding Knife'' is ''identical'' to ''Knife'' on Brian Hartnell's car door.It is palpably clear that the author of the ''Fairfield letters'' is the same person, and that all three missives share many similarities to aspects of Zodiac's ''authenticated''letters.
My general point : Most of the ''unconfirmed letters'' are, more than likely, written by Zodiac. There are not a deluge of them....but ones that ''The Authorities'' have elected to release, despite not officially authenticating them.
The Authorities are not ''divine arbitrators '' here [?].For,whatever reason, they have ''elected'' not to authenticate them.Perhaps,no relating ''forensics'' were found on them [?].Perhaps, they just want to see,how general reactions develop, in response to them [?].
The ''unconfirmed letters'',at worst, are ''possibly nots'' - not ''possiblies'' ! Can you imagine the enormous amount of ''trashy'' hoax letters, that ''The Authorities'' have actually received,at the time of Zodiac's most prolific output, much less,in all the years since [?].
Lyndon Lafferty believed that he saw a connection between The Benicia High School note and the 1990 Celebrity Cipher - two unconfirmed Zodiac missives.I would suggest, that it is possible, that these two ''unconfirmed'' were deliberately handed to him, without his real knowledge of true intention,by ''The Authorities''.
It is clear, that Mr.Lafferty did not ''call'' The Benicia High School note, completely correctly. It is palpably obvious, that the postscript reads ''QIR'',and not ''AIR''.A significant difference in ''inference'' [?].
With Ricardo's assistance,I will shortly illustrate ''The Solution'' to The 1990 Celebrity Cipher, highlighting, apart from a number of points of ''persuasion'',that there is an actual connection, between the cipher and the note. Two missives,twenty-one years apart.
This,of course, will be up to the reader's discretion, since, neither note nor cipher, has been authenticated by ''The Authorities''.
But,do bear in mind, that if the reader,is in any way persuaded....that there is a far greater implication at stake, here.
That being, that ''The Authorities'' have known, all along that Zodiac has been posting correspondence, well after ''their decision'' to allow doubt,in people's minds.
This, may not come as a great surprise to more seasoned Zodiac enthusiasts. But,I do believe, that in order to move the debate further along, with respect to Zodiac's whereabouts, lifespan, and indeed, his identity,we should not feel restrained by,in effect,a claim by ''The Authorities'',that Zodiac may not have corresponded after 1974.
I would suggest that it is ''palpably clear'' that Zodiac has....and what's more, ''The Authorities'' have known this, all along.

For those who post and contribute to the ''ciphers and mailing'' sections of the larger Zodiac websites :
In light of Ricardo's ''Project'' report on deciphering The 1990 Celebrity Cypher,I am honored that the ''applied mathematicians and computer buffs'' are starting to consider adapting their programs to become more receptive to foreign languages.
If I might offer some advice : ''Don't feel pushed,to do this.''.It is my belief that Zodiac did not acquire ''usable and passable'' French, until after a series of letters, that includes the ''340''.
But,that is not to say that Zodiac, didn't employ ''other tactics'' to put computers ''off the scent'',for the 340,in particular. If the reader is one of these individuals that employs a computer as a ''battering ram'' to break down the ''340'',might I suggest that you, nevertheless,''take stock'' [?].
Mathematicians,by the mid 19th Century, were pretty ''savvy'' about the software element required for computational machines. In fact,it constituted a whole body of knowledge, known as Numerical Analysis and Computational Methods. It's just that the ''harnessing'' of electricity had yet to be perfected, and modern computers only started to take on the semblance of modern technology,by the mid 20th Century, with the advent of the transistor.
Computers were invented by Mathematicians,to ''assist'' Mathematicians - NOT to replace them !
It can be a bit of a ''blokey''thing - but too many individuals do not see the point of doing anything, unless there is a machine involved.
Sometimes,a little bit more ''brain input'' goes a long way,to solve certain problems. With the computers employed as the ''work horses''.
Stay focused,and genuine best wishes.
