What did you think about today’s announcement about a group that claims to have identified the Zodiac killer? I think the only thing they got right was that there was a “trio” of individuals that worked together on the Zodiac killings!

I think it's an extraordinary naive '' outing '' as such, by Fox news, looking at the Zodiac case as something that might bring in readers, having latched on to an apparent group of dabbling amateurs and retiree cops - most of whom haven't yet performed rigorous research on the case.
That's at least, the way it comes across. For the life of me, most of these enthusiasts never quite seem to be able to grasp that justice can only be dispensed by departments of justice and, there is little or no evidence shown in the last few years, that departments of justice are actually requesting any more significant information than they already have on the case, in order to work out if a judicial resolution is possible.
Perhaps a little unkind of me ? To stick my neck out and be specific, I believe that the case of the Zodiac Killer has now largely been ceded back to the US DOJ who, have had to witness too much disharmony, infighting and bickering between policing agencies that, are desperate to either feel that they still serve a purpose in the case...or that history will not portray them badly in a case that may never be officially solved.
Those Departments of Justice that have played an active role in the Zodiac Killer case, in recent years, beyond the US DOJ, I believe to be the CA DOJ ; the NV DOJ ; the MA DOJ ; the TX DOJ, and the Crown Office, UK.
As for the rest of LE, not a whole lot of involvement, with '' fetch & carry '' duties on request and on occasion, from departments of justice. The FBI are the primary custodians of forensics and correspondences, with NCIS Washington D.C. the custodians of military records of suspects and POI's, past and present.
The future of the case, rests with DOJ Special Agents, appointed criminologists and public prosecutors, now.....and essentially, they already have what they need.
So, personally at least, I simply do not buy into the '' revelation '' that 40-odd enthusiasts are on the verge of breaking the case, with a now-dead '' suspect '', and no significant persuading links, as presented.

It's interesting what you have observed already, davb3, and I think the Gary Poste story is already looking like a figurative '' dead duck in the water '' as a viable Zodiac.
This 40-strong cold-case group would have done well to hold back from giving anything of themselves, until their offering looked more convincing. But, a wide-publication opportunity from Fox news probably presented itself and, they bit the hand gratefully for the exposure. Unfortunately all too early ( ? ) in their investigations.
As a general observation, there is a whiff of '' something in the air '', as to a suspicion that the official LE powers that be, might be close to disclosing something meaningful in the case and, it would appear that Zodiac case followers might be at the start of experiencing a '' Silly Season '' of similar occurrences to the Fox news expose, as those that believe they may have identified Zodiac, rush to present their '' tuppence ha'penny worth '' of invested investigation, before a real resolution to the case comes about.
'' Silly Season '' ? - now that's a curious expression, originating from Fleet Street, London where, a quiet period usually at the end of Summer, inspired bored journalists to make up any old rubbish to ensure that the public kept buying newspapers ( e.g. Hitler was a woman ; London bus found on the moon. ). A forerunner to '' Fake News '', then.
Could be some more '' entertainment '' to come ?

Just as an update on picking up early reactions to the work of this Case Breakers group, there are claims that Tom Colbert, heading a team of amateur investigators that promote the notion that Robert Rackstraw was D B Cooper, had an active involvement in the promotion of Gary Poste as the Zodiac.
More of interest, perhaps is, that Mr Colbert is at loggerheads with the FBI over the Robert Rackstraw claim and, unsuccessfully took the FBI to court over claims that the FBI were deliberately withholding information that proved that Rackstraw was Dan Cooper, the hijacker.
In an interesting twist, it is possible that not only were the FBI baiting the real Zodiac, with their December 11th 2020 Zodiac Tweet marking an anniversary of the '' I knew '' letter, previously attributed to D B Cooper....but actively baiting Tom Colbert also, who claims that the 10-digit codes left in the '' I knew '' letter prove that Robert Rackstraw was Dan Cooper.
This, to drive home to Mr Colbert that anything Colbert has left to point to a Rackstraw-Cooper connection.....adds up to '' nothing at all ''.
The implication that the FBI '' came armed '' with Rubislaw 32's solution to the 340 Cipher, as a subliminal goading to the Zodiac, but still acknowledged a '' cipher solved by private citizens '' ( Oranchak & Co's solution ), appears to be in keeping with a Tom Colbert '' baiting '' also, since the '' I knew '' letter carries potential pertinence to both the Zodiac and D B Cooper cases.
Whatever the precise purpose(s) employed by the FBI, the U.S. Attorney General, and boss to the FBI's Director, did not appreciate such duplicitous shenanigans.
Taking the families of the Zodiac's victims' names in vain, even if to lay claims of ( falsely ) caring about them, was a disgrace by the FBI for '' starters ''. But, it also suggests that the FBI have not forgiven Colbert, for forcing the FBI into having to explain themselves to a court of law, over their D B Cooper investigations.
And, in fairness to Mr Colbert, the implication that he has not forgiven the FBI either, since he still believes that they are withholding evidence that incriminates Rackstraw, as Dan Cooper.

Perhaps at this juncture, I should explain at least a little about the '' real '' ( Rubislaw 32's ) solution to the Zodiac's 340 Cipher and, this same solution that mentions '' The Curse of Oak Island '', the assassinations of Black Panther student leaders Bunchy Carter ( Eldridge Cleaver's protege ) and John Huggins, by hired COINTELPRO gunman Claude '' Chuchessa '' Hubert, and a joke about Darlene Ferrin and Catholicism....with a recurring theme about communication, using both audio tape and teletype code :
The FBI's Cryptanalysis Unit and the Crown Office, UK, received the 340 Cipher solution three weeks apart. The Cryptanalysis Unit in July 2017, with the Crown Office into August 2017. But, this was only because my liaison Detective Sergeant happened to be on holiday - otherwise both agencies would have received the solution at the same time. My liaison detective had left notice of other detectives for me to contact in his automated e-mail receiver, but I thought I would just leave the situation as it was, knowing that when he returned from holiday, the FBI's Cryptanalysis Unit would have already had three weeks to look at the solution and, would be able to offer advice to the Crown Office, about the solution. This advice would have been recorded by the Interception of Communications Commissioner's Office ( IOCCO ), and I still hold e-mails of correspondence with my liaison Detective Sergeant who, served as a messenger between me and the Crown office.
The FBI and Crown Office will be aware of what transpired immediately after the Crown Office received the 340 Cipher solution which, I later lodged with a Judiciary Committee of politicians, feeling that I had to, given that which transpired - real people in public life being unfairly hounded, and losing their jobs. I will withhold from further information at this time, but simply to illustrate that the '' real '' solution to the Zodiac's 340 Cipher had already '' had a life of its own '' and had affected people's lives, for three and a half years, before the FBI's dishonest claim of '' a cipher solved by private citizens '' in their sanctioned December 11th 2020 Zodiac Tweet.
The FBI know perfectly well about the dishonest nature of their December 11th 2020 Tweet. And, so now do other agencies, such as the US DOJ.

Indeed....this might emerge in the coming days, with regard to the Fox News story - the extent to which Tom Colbert was behind this '' promotion '' of Gary Poste, as a viable Zodiac. And, to what extent the so-called '' Case Breakers '' were genuine Zodiac sleuths...and to what extent it may have been concocted as a conspiracy by D B Cooper sleuths, in some sort of attempt to put the FBI on the back foot.
However, it does also shed further light, I would suggest, on reasons why the FBI might wish to suppress the real solution to the 340 Cipher. At the time of Black Panther student leader Bunchy Carter's assassination, the FBI had been looking for fugitive Eldridge Cleaver for just a few months. Cleaver, a writer and Minister of information for the Black Panther Party, was wanted for skipping bail on charges of assault with intent to murder policemen.
The fact that the young Bunchy Carter was Eldridge Cleaver's close friend and protege, will certainly have historians' tongues wagging, when the truth about the real ( Rubislaw 32's ) solution to the 340 Cipher emerges. Questions might be asked of the FBI whether J Edgar Hoover hadn't actually sanctioned an execution of Bunchy Carter - simply to see if Eldridge Cleaver might put his head above the parapet.
'' The pen is mightier than the sword '' - an old adage that was certainly not lost on the Zodiac himself. Clearly, the FBI and Hoover were concerned about what Eldridge Cleaver might write about or say, while remaining '' on the run ''.

Investigative journalist Billy Jensen has now stated that D B Cooper sleuth, and advocator of Robert Rackstraw being skyjacker Cooper, TOM COLBERT, was behind the promotion of the story : '' Gary Poste is the Zodiac Killer ''. In effect, a conspiracy by Colbert and 40 of his fellow D B Cooper sleuths.
Billy Jensen was hired by the History Channel, to pair up with ex-assistant FBI Director Tom Fuentes, in order to research the validity of Robert Rackstraw as a viable Dan Cooper, for a forthcoming documentary to be made by the History Channel.
Billy Jensen claims that, as hard as they tried, he and Tom Fuentes could turn up nothing to link Rackstraw to skyjacker Cooper. It does seem, on the surface at least, that this recent '' Zodiac hoax '' was a pay-back of sorts, by Tom Colbert on ex-FBI employee Tom Fuentes. And, probably contributed to, by the December 11th 2020 FBI Zodiac Tweet, coinciding with the anniversary of the D B Cooper '' I knew '' letter, now thought to have been authored by the Zodiac Killer, whose four 10-digit codes left behind, are solved by Rubislaw 32's 340 Cipher solution keys.

In the last 24 hours, the Nevada County based Californian newspaper '' THE UNION '' has reported that the Tom Colbert-led Case Breaker team has simply latched on to a forthcoming Zodiac-related book to be published, by Savanah Georgian TV news anchor man Dale Julin, called '' Catching Zodiac ''.
Dale Julin's inspiration for believing that house painter Gary Poste might be the Zodiac, came from an anonymous associate, known only as '' Wil ''. Wil once met Gary Poste at a wedding in Tahoe, with Poste joking about a victim that Wil took Poste to be referring to as Donna Lass. Poste talked about planting '' A She in a Tree that will grow forever ''. This, Julin interpreted as Poste manoeuvring the body of Donna Lass up a tree, by means of a painter's set of pulley systems.
Dale Julin subsequently became transfixed by this story and, started to decipher the Zodiac's cards and puzzles in his spare time as a news anchor man.
No doubt we will hear more about this when Dale Julin's book is published.
A member of Tom Colbert's Case Breaker team and former Army counterintelligence agent, Jen Bucholtz, is quoted as commenting :
'' I was amazed at Dale Julin's tenacity and perseverance.''.
I suspect that, for the majority of regular Zodiac followers, the verdict will simply be : '' amazed ''.

The official 7-page press release on the Case Breakers presenting a case for Gary Poste as being the Zodiac Killer, is widely available on the internet and, although neatly presented, really doesn't add up to very much, and I for one agree with the FBI's negative verdict.
But, hopefully this will be a wake-up call to the FBI and, how they might have dealt with Tom Colbert, over his claims of Robert Rackstraw being Dan Cooper, in a more diplomatic and sympathetic way. Years of intransigence and simple denials without qualification, must have taken its toll on Colbert who, should be congratulated for taking the FBI to court over his belief that they were suppressing information.
The FBI have been involved in the Zodiac Killer case for 52 years now, and preside over a criminal phenomenon with abject failure. Is it so difficult for them to understand that when the public witness this abject failure, that some will '' take up arms '' in the belief that they could do better than an organization like the FBI ?
And, as I have intimated in an open message to the Director of the FBI, all he is left with now, is fielding and '' batting off '' presented solutions from members of the public, because Departments of Justice have also had enough of the FBI's performance, themselves.
Take out any political allegiances and, Mr Trump's decision to fire ex-FBI Director James Comey for '' Showboating '', and telling his permanent replacement Christopher Wray, to '' Clean up your mess ''....was NOT FOR NO REASON.
( Nor indeed, deputy Director Andrew McCabe's firing, given that he insisted that his wife should accept political funding from the Clinton Foundation, even though the FBI were presumably investigating Mrs Clinton's e-mails, with impartiality.)
Something rotten in the state of FBI-hierarchy ? The '' perception '' at least, was there.
Now then....where have I put the e-mail address of Ms. Kamala Harris ?
What is most disturbing in recent years, is the nature of an '' arrangement '' in place, between the Hearst Corporation ( Sf Chronicle, The History Channel ) and the FBI, with respect to the case of the Zodiac Killer. The FBI's '' Racketeering Unit '' ? Not so different from the fall from grace of Police Scotland's '' Counter Corruption Unit ''.
And strangely, related.

While on the subject of a collection of claims, such as those related to the Zodiac case, having questionable integrity....being termed as a '' Silly Season '' - gives me the opportunity of pointing readers to the Waco Main FBI Files again, and a probable Zodiac letter from April 20th 1993. The day following the final storming of the Waco compound by forces of the FBI and law enforcement partners.
To the Director of the FBI :
'' Dear Sir, I am writing to express my support for the FBI and all the personnel involved in the '' Branch Davidian '' standoff in Waco, Texas.''
'' One has to be impressed by the professional conduct of all the agents.''
'' We all know that this will usher in the '' Silly Season '' for the media and politicians. All will demand '' Why did the FBI allow those poor people to kill themselves ? ''. ''
'' I hope you will direct your comments to the tragic deaths of the four ATF agents, and the remarkable restraint by your agents.''
'' Respectfully, ( redacted ) ''

Here, we see the author electing to employ a quintessential British English idiom ( Silly Season ) - but then '' spoils '' it as such, by the apparent need to qualify the idiom ( ....for the media and politicians...).
The author is simply showing off his extensive grasp of English Language, and happy to give away that he has travelled.
Although some might dispute any or all three letters attributed to the Zodiac Killer, April 1978 - July 1978, there are clear indications in all three that the Zodiac wishes to convey that he is a worldly person, having travelled, but now wishing to reclaim his reign of terror ( control ).
Perhaps it should be noted that '' Silly Season '' in the English speaking Southern Hemisphere, more usually refers to the Christmas period and, hottest time of the year, when behaviour might be excused, by excessive drinking and socializing.
But '' Silly Season '' does not usually find familiarity in North America.

That's good of you Doranchak, and it is a well presented interpretation.
There is not much that can save Gary Francis Poste as a viable Zodiac for much longer and, it is a mystery as to why the Case Breaker team, stand so resolute.
There is, of course, the matter of the privately funded $50,000 reward that Riverside P.D. were touting and, for which the Case Breaker team had already made enquiries.
Whether Case Breaker team leader Tom Colbert genuinely believes in Poste is up for debate, in itself.
I still admire him for having taken the FBI to court, in the belief that they were suppressing information on the D B Cooper case. Although unsuccessful, he remains a trailblazer among sleuths, in that respect.
Hats off to Mr Colbert.

This, after the FBI had lied that they had conferred with the families of the Zodiac's victims, over a '' cipher solved by private citizens''.

Given that the second Tweet, 10 months later, was a '' force of hand '' to refute the Gary Poste claim, with the FBI's simple declaration of the Zodiac case remaining '' open and unsolved '' - then all that has changed is, that there was no duplicity from the FBI, in the advent of their second Tweet.
Perhaps U.S. Attorney General William Barr's '' bollocking '' of FBI Director Christopher Wray, following the FBI's December 11th 2020 Tweet, has finally driven home a message to Mr Wray ? i.e. '' Behave yourself.''
''....and an echo arose from the suicides grave..'' Due to the ongoing nature of investigations, and out of respect for the victims and their families....''...''
