As we all know, Zodiac wrote to several different papers and several different people specifically. He wrote to prominent San Fran Attorney Melvin Belli and addressed the high priced Lawyer informally in his letter by opening with "Dear Melvin. This is the Zodiac Speaking..." as though he and Mel were on first name terms. He appeared to be reaching out to Belli and the tone of his letter was more a cry for help than anything threatening. This could not be said, however, for Zodiac's personally addressed mail to Paul Avery, crime writer at the San Francisco Chronicle. Mr Avery had said some less than flattering things about the man hiding behind the alias of Zodiac and the Zodiac decided it was time to send Avery a greeting card for Halloween in 1970.
October 27th, 1970 and Paul Avery is given a letter addressed to him personally. He looks at the envelope declaring 'Paul Averly, SF Chronicle, 5th - Mission, SF.' He notes the odd symbol on the upper left portion of the envelope before turning it over and breaking the seal. Inside there appears to be a Halloween themed greeting card. It has been written on by the sender and Paul starts reading the message which opens by stating: "FROM YOUR SECRET PAL." He reads on: "I feel it in my bones, your ache to know my name and so I'll clue you in....." Avery opens the card to read inside: BOO! But then why spoil the game. PEEK-A-BOO, YOU ARE DOOMED."
In this post I want to discuss the peculiar remark found written on the inside on the envelope that the above card came in. There was a message saying "Sorry No Cipher Sorry no Cipher" the same comment said twice and written in the shape of an X.
Now why would Zodiac make such a comment? Why apologise for not sending a cipher? If he'd yet to send a letter or communication without adding a cryptogram then maybe he'd be justified in saying this but the fact is he'd sent many letters and cards by this point and none of them contained a cipher, so why apologise for not adding one with this card? I think Zodiac wants to draw our attention to, or is hinting at, this card itself being a cryptic message.
I have long suspected that the symbolism on this card is representative of 'Skull and Bones' the secret society attended by the likes of George W. Bush. On this card is a skull, under which are the bones. The word next to the skull is SECRET. It's just a theory of mine to go with the many many others out there. But remember, Zodiac apologises for his not sending is audience a cipher. "Sorry No Cipher' he apologises. Now while some may choose to believe that Zodiac was sorry and apologetic to his public for not sending them a wonderful word puzzle, I believe that he's sarcastically hinting at there being a cryptographic message within this card already and so there is no need to add an actual cipher.
I also think it's likely that the back portion of the card stating Paradice Slaves etc also has a clue or cryptic message within it. There is clearly four methods of murder listed on the back 'By Fire, By Gun, By Knife and By Rope. All have the word 'By' written horizontally above their respected method of murder, all except By Knife, with this 'By' appearing vertically above the method of killing. Again, some may choose to overlook this or dismiss it as meaningless or coincidence if they wish, I though, would bet my life on the idea that this is again deliberate and intentionally done by the writer as it has a meaning or clue that he wants us to work out.
So, thoughts anyone?
